# Ramaphosa says the ANC is legally protecting its identity in the Appeal Court case against the MK Party
# KZN’s Director of Public Prosecutions awaits case dockets on the convicted criminal Stuart Scharnick
# And tennis: Musetti also withdraws from Italy’s Davis Cup team
# ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa insists the party is legally protecting its identity in the Supreme Court of Appeal hearing against the MK Party over the use of the Umkhonto we Sizwe name and logo. MK says the heritage belongs to all veterans of the liberation struggle. The proceedings are focusing on intellectual property, copyright, and trademark arguments. Ramaphosa said in Kliptown, Soweto, they await the verdict:
Ramaphosa also says the case of 153 Palestinian refugees brought to South Africa is under review. The refugees spent over 12-hours on a grounded plane at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng yesterday before being allowed to disembark. Ramaphosa says Home Affairs, International Relations, and intelligence agencies are assessing their origins and documentation. He confirmed an announcement will follow once the matter is properly evaluated:
# KwaZulu-Natal Director of Public Prosecutions, Elaine Harrison, has acknowledged developments in the case of convicted criminal Stuart Scharnick. Acting head of detectives, Anthony Gopaul, alleges Scharnick, linked to suspended deputy police commissioner Shadrack Sibiya, was shielded by corrupt officials. Investigations in January revealed possible tampering with his criminal records. Police and the National Prosecuting Authority are now collaborating, with relevant dockets to be handed to Harrison’s office for further investigation following Scharnick’s defamation case against head of Crime Intelligence, Dumisani Khumalo.
# The Forum for South Africa has condemned the City of Ekurhuleni’s requirement for residents to submit a written notice at least 14 days before slaughtering animals for religious or cultural purposes. The metro says traditional and religious slaughtering is an important part of many celebrations, but must be done in accordance with the Public Health by-laws. FOSA leader Tebogo Mashilompane says this is an assault on African culture and religious rights:
# Tennis: World number nine Lorenzo Musetti has also decided not to play for two-time defending champion Italy in the Davis Cup Finals, starting in Bologna in his home country on Tuesday. This follows a similar decision by the country’s best player, Jannik Sinner. Musetti was eliminated by world number one, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, from the ATP Finals yesterday. He says he decided to withdraw because he isn’t 100-percent fit and his partner is due to give birth to their second child in the next few days.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-15-cents and the euro at 19-rand-92-cents. One British pound costs 22-rand-53-cents and Bitcoin trades at 96-thousand-39-dollars.
