# The Government of National Unity leaders reaffirm their commitment to the national priorities
# The GOOD Party says communities like Reiger Park deserve safety, justice, and meaningful reform
# And, the High Court orders Johannesburg to expedite informal traders’ registration
# Ten party leaders who are part of the government of national unity have concluded a two-day retreat at the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng. President Cyril Ramaphosa and other party heads reflected on progress under the GNU’s statement of intent, addressing national challenges like unemployment, crime, and poverty. They agreed on regular strategic meetings, urgent action on government programmes, food security, youth opportunities, and crime. The forum also highlighted South Africa’s G20 role and reaffirmed unity and commitment to serving all citizens.
# The GOOD Party says violent crime and reckless gunfire have become an unbearable reality for many communities. This follows the deadly drive-by shooting in Reiger Park in Boksburg on the Gauteng East Rand where six people were killed and three others wounded. The party’s Matthew Cook has called on police to act swiftly and use all available resources to bring those responsible to justice:
# The Forum for South Africa has expressed concern at the escalating wave of violent crime and gang-related killings in the country. Six people were killed in a drive-by shooting in Reiger Park, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, six people were also killed in gang-related incidents in the Cape Flats, Cape Town, over the weekend. FOSA leader, Tebogo Mashilompane, says a national strategy to combat gangsterism and organised crime is urgently needed:
# The High Court has ruled that the City of Johannesburg must fast-track the verification and registration of informal traders. The Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa brought the case after traders were removed from illegal or undesignated areas, arguing their rights to earn a living were violated. Judge Brad Wanless ordered the city to start the process tomorrow, to be completed by the 18th of this month, while enforcing existing by-laws.
# Road running: Two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge says he will race seven marathons across seven continents over the next two years. This is to help raise funds for the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation, which supports educational and environmental causes worldwide. The Kenyan great has dubbed this challenge the Kipchoge’s World Tour. The athlete, who finished the New York Marathon in 17th place yesterday, says he has nothing left to prove, but just to inspire people to give back.
