# National police commissioner Fannie Masemola told Parliament’s ad hoc committee he cannot comment on the ongoing investigation into Police minister Senzo Mchunu. President Cyril Ramaphosa placed Mchunu on special leave in July over allegations of colluding with controversial businessmen Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and Katiso “KT” Molefe, accused of running crime syndicates and interfering in investigations. Masemola revealed that criminal cartels influence who leads the police and often move to oust commissioners:
# COSATU is calling on the Special Investigating Unit and collaborating law enforcement agencies to continue seizing stolen assets from those involved in the Tembisa Hospital scandal. Following the raid at Hangwani Maumela’s luxury property in Sandton yesterday, Cosatu’s spokesperson, Zanele Sabela, called on the SIU and other agencies to ensure culprits are prosecuted and send to prison for a long time:
# The UDM says peace will only be achieved in the Middle East through justice and respect for human rights. UDM deputy president Nqabayomzi Kwankwa says the party salutes Mandla Mandela, Zukiswa Wanner, Carolyn Shelver, Zaheera Soomar, Fatima Hendricks and Reaz Moola for their courage and solidarity with the people of Palestine. He says Hendricks, a cancer survivor, recounted being stripped of her hijab and mocked by soldiers while in detention:
# Road running: Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, says the Region 5 Marathon is not just about running, it’s about showing the world the strength, unity, and talent of Africa. Organised by the African Union Sports Council, the marathon is set to take place in Tshwane on Sunday. The main event is the 21.1-kilometre half-marathon, with the male and female winners walking away with 50-thousand-rand each. # And finally: Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous fight to restore democracy in her country. Global attention around this year’s prize also followed speculation about US president Donald Trump’s long-standing pursuit of the honour. The Nobel Committee’s Jorgen Watne Frydnes described Machado as a unifying leader who champions ballots over bullets in the fight for free and fair elections:
