# Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero says they have successfully secured a substantial grant of approximately 548-million-rand from prominent Dutch development finance institution Invest International Public Programmes. The funding is a step forward in the metro’s commitment to sustainable waste management and environmental leadership. Spokesperson Khathutshelo Mulaudzi says Johannesburg’s objectives are clear and ambitious: to minimise waste, drastically reduce reliance on landfills, and harness renewable energy:
# Deputy minister of Electricity and Energy Samantha Graham-Maré says the renewable energy industry presents a defining opportunity for African countries to leverage their vast resources to re-industrialise and create dignified employment opportunities. The continent holds 60-percent of the world’s best solar resources, vast wind potential, and many of the critical minerals that underpin the global clean energy economy. Graham-Maré says co-development of technology, de-risking investment capital and public-private partnerships are also key to Africa’s renewable energy re-industrialisation:
# And finally, Britain’s exports of plastic waste to developing countries soared by 84-percent in the first half of this year compared with last year. This is according to data from the Last Beach Cleanup. The increase in exports was mainly to Indonesia and Malaysia. The percentage of UK plastic waste going directly to countries not within the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development was 20-percent of total plastic waste exports this year. The UK is one of the top three countries exporting plastic waste, at about 600-thousand tonnes a year.
