# President Cyril Ramaphosa has set up a panel tasked with selecting the person who will be the next Director of Public Prosecutions. The panel, which will be chaired by minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, comprises leaders of the legal fraternity and Chapter Nine institutions. Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, says the current NDPP, Advocate Shamila Batohi’s term ends in January:
# The GOOD Party says if South Africa is to remain a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law, then those implicated in the erosion of state institutions must face the full consequences of their actions. The Madlanga commission has issued a Rule 3 notice, formally notifying controversial North West businessman, Brown Mogotsi, of being implicated in alleged unlawful interference at the South African Police Service. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says Mogotsi must be held accountable:
Meanwhile, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has warned that South Africa risks becoming a banana republic if corruption within the police is not eradicated. Referencing the Madlanga commission, Mbalula told the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union that resolutions must lead to implementation. He vowed accountability for those representing the ANC, stressing that the party must lead decisively and that alliance partners remain united through constructive political engagement:
Moving abroad:
# The World Bank says Sub-Saharan Africa’s economy is expected to grow by 3.8-percent this year, up from 3.5-percent in April. This is driven by stable inflation and exchange rates in countries like Ethiopia. The Bank’s Africa Pulse report notes that improved conditions have boosted private consumption and investment. Growth is projected to average 4.4-percent over the next two years, though fiscal tightening could slow recovery. Ethiopia, Nigeria, and Ivory Coast recorded the strongest upward revisions.
# Rugby: Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx says although they are delighted by their back-to-back Rugby Championship titles, hard work now lies ahead before their tour of the Northern Hemisphere. South Africa ended the competition on a high with consecutive victories over the All Blacks and two over the Pumas, but Marx says they still have to improve. The Boks play Japan in London on the first of November, followed by Tests against France in Paris, Italy in Turin, Ireland in Dublin and Wales in Cardiff on consecutive weekends.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-23-cents and the euro at 20-rand-2-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-9-cents and Bitcoin trades at 121-thousand-708-dollars. Gold sells at four-thousand-and-36-dollars-51-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-85-cents a barrel.
