# Acting Police minister Firoz Cachalia, says organised crime syndicates are increasing in South Africa and government needs to strengthen its law enforcement agencies to combat them. He was speaking during the handover of helicopters and armoured vehicles to specialised units at the police’s academy in Pretoria today. Cachalia says he has been working to build trust and confidence in the police since taking over the ministry two months ago:
# The Activists and Citizens Forum is advising president Cyril Ramaphosa and Police minister Senzo Mchunu to resign immediately, to save the country from more embarrassment. This follows after damning revelations were laid bare at the Commission over criminal syndicates who have infiltrated the criminal justice system. The forum’s spokesperson, Dennis Bloem:
# The GOOD Party welcomes the ruling by the High Court in Pretoria rejecting the government’s attempt to delay the 167-million-rand apartheid-era damages case. Judge Nicoline Janse van Nieuwenhuizen said further delays serve no justice, especially for elderly victims, and ordered the government to pay costs. GOOD secretary-general Brett Herron says the ruling is key to holding the state accountable and restoring justice after decades of Truth and Reconciliation Commission interference:
# Dame Sarah Mullally has been named as the first woman Archbishop of Canterbury in the Church of England’s almost 500-year history. In her first address she pledged that in her new role she will listen to survivors and the vulnerable. She said hatred and racism of any kind cannot be allowed to tear people apart. The 63-year old Mullally has been Bishop of London for seven years. The Church had been without someone in the top job for almost a year, after Justin Welby resigned over his failure to report a prolific child abuser.
# Cricket: The Proteas women’s team had the worst possible start to their World Cup campaign in India when they lost by ten wickets. England won the toss and sent the Proteas in to bat. South Africa’s top order collapsed and only Sinalo Jafta, who top-scored with 22 runs, reached double digits. England dismissed the Proteas women in the 21ste over for just 69 runs. Linsey Smith was the main destroyer, taking three wickets for just seven runs in four overs. South Africa face New Zealand on Monday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-25-cents and the euro at 20-rand-25-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-20-cents and Bitcoin trades at 120-thousand-455-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-862-dollars-99-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 64-dollars-23-cents a barrel.
