# The Special Investigating Unit links a 816-million-rand Tembisa Hospital syndicate to Ramaphosa’s nephew
# Dumisani Khumalo warns that exposing certain evidence will endanger informants and methodologies
# And golf: Rory McIlroy hits out at the crowd’s abusive behaviour at the Ryder Cup
# The Special Investigating Unit has linked a Tembisa Hospital corruption syndicate to businessman Hangwani Maumela, nephew of president Cyril Ramaphosa. SIU head Andy Mothiba says Maumela’s network funneled 816-million-rand through one-thousand-728 purchase orders, bypassing procurement rules. Associates, including Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala, also benefited. Mothiba confirmed fraudulent splitting of tenders as both successful and unsuccessful companies were found to have colluded, working together and compensating one another:
Meanwhile, the DA in Gauteng has called for persons in corrupt syndicates implicated in the hospital scandal to be prosecuted. Former finance official Babita Deokaran was assasinated after blowing the whistle. The DA’s Jack Bloom confirmed to Newzroom Afrika that officials implicated are yet to be criminally charged. The Special Investigating Unit’s interim report revealed today that three syndicates were operating at the hospital. Bloom urges premier Panyaza Lesufi to act decisively:
# Head of Crime Intelligence, Dumisani Khumalo, says some of the evidence he holds cannot be shared publicly as it would endanger informants and expose investigative methods. Khumalo told the Madlanga commission in Pretoria that he will apply for parts of his testimony to be heard in camera to protect ongoing criminal investigations. He said concluded investigations could be made public, but for now, protecting operational integrity and safety of those involved, remains a priority:
Moving abroad:
# Jaguar Land Rover says it will partially restart manufacturing of its vehicles in the coming days after a cyberattack halted operations at its United Kingdom factories. The company owned by India’s Tata Motors earlier announced that it had been targeted by hackers, severely disrupting sales and production and forcing the company to seek emergency funding. The UK government announced that a government credit agency will provide the guarantee for a loan from a commercial bank, to be repaid over five years.
# Golf: Five-time major champion Rory McIlroy has criticised the New York crowd for what he described as unacceptable and abusive behaviour at the Ryder Cup in Bethpage Black. Team Europe beat the USA 15-13 to claim back-to-back titles and the first on American soil since 2012. A raucous crowd hurled personal insults towards the European players the entire weekend while McIlroy’s wife, Erica, had beer thrown on her. McIlroy says this behaviour should never be accepted in the sport:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-29-cents and the euro at 20-rand-27-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-24-cents and Bitcoin trades at 112-thousand-316-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-820-dollars-1-cent a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-81-cents a barrel.
