# Acting police deputy national commissioner, Khasi Senthumule has assigned Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner Mbuso Khumalo to assume oversight of the double murder investigation. This is into the killing of father and son, Cloete and Thomas Murray, and the murder of attorney Bouwer van Niekerk. The Murrays shooting occurred along N1 between Johannesburg and Pretoria in March 2023. Van Niekerk was shot and killed inside the offices of SmithSew in Sandton earlier this month.
# Eskom says it continues to deliver a stable and consistent electricity supply for the country. Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena says the energy availability factor fluctuated between 65-percent and 71-percent, with the month-to-date average holding above 70-percent at 71.15-percent. She says the last time it trended this high was in 2021:
Meanwhile, the National Energy Regulator has announced the commencement of a focused market inquiry into the implementation and impact of fixed charges and other associated charges levied by electricity distributors, including Eskom and municipalities. NERSA’s spokesperson, Charles Hlebela says this market inquiry aims to reveal how the distributors formulate charges, which resulted in substantially high increases being added to the approved 12.74-percent tariff increase for Eskom for the 2025/2026 financial year:
# AfriForum has condemned the attack on the Paul Kruger statue on Church Square in Pretoria, where parts of two Boer warrior statues and the security fence were damaged. The incident comes a week after the EFF called for the removal of Afrikaner monuments in Parliament. AfriForum’s Ernst van Zyl says the organisation will demand tighter security and repairs, vowing to defend Afrikaner heritage:

# Golf: Team Europe secured a strong 5.5 to 2.5 lead over the United States on the first day of the Ryder Cup at the Bethpage Black course in New York. The visitors dominated the morning foursomes with a 3-1 lead, highlighted by impressive victories from Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton, Ludvig Åberg and Matt Fitzpatrick, and Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood. Though the US team, energized by a vocal home crowd, fought back in the afternoon fourballs, Europe won the session 2.5-1.5 to extend their advantage.
# And diving: Russian freediver Alexey Molchanov plunged 126 metres in a single breath to set a new world record at the AIDA Freediving World Championships in Limassol, Cyprus. He descended deep below the Mediterranean Sea with nothing but a headlight, two fins, and a rope as a guide, in a feat considered one of the most technically challenging freediving categories. Molchanov broke his own 2024 world record of 125 metres, during which he held his breath for a staggering four-minutes-and-32-seconds.
