Eco Minute 13:30
BULLETIN 25 September 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The South African Federation of Trade Unions says US president Donald Trump’s recent comments on climate change are reckless, and amount to a dangerous form of climate denialism and imperial arrogance. In a scathing speech to the United Nations earlier this week, Trump criticised climate change, calling it the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world. Saftu’s general-secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, says while Trump mocks renewable energy, workers and poor communities globally are living through unprecedented climate disasters:
# The DA in the Free State says the Fezile Dabi District Municipality must be applauded for conducting a district-wide landfill site audit in an effort to assist struggling local municipalities. The audit has highlighted serious shortcomings across local municipalities, which include no access control or fencing, inadequate operational plans, burning of waste, and ineffective management. The DA’s Mbali Mnaba says for years, local municipal landfill sites have struggled with non-compliance, creating environmental risks:
# And finally: The South African National Parks, Endangered Wildlife Trust, rangers and private partners have captured and relocated a male lion from Letaba Ranch to Kruger National Park. The lion had killed livestock near Giyani and Phalaborwa earlier this month. Limpopo MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Tshitereke Matibe praised the team and urged communities to respect park boundaries for safety and conservation. Authorities are also preparing to relocate two more lions roaming near Mtimkulu Nature Reserve.
