# President Cyril Ramaphosa called for significant reforms to the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, to reflect a more equitable and representative global order. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly last night, he strongly condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, labeling them “genocide,” and urged the international community to enforce international law without prejudice. Ramaphosa emphasized the urgent need for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and also highlighted the disproportionate impact of climate change and debt on developing nations.
# National police commissioner Fannie Masemola says Police minister Senzo Mchunu supported Crime Detection deputy national police commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya’s attempt to take control of all police dockets. Testifying at the Madlanga commission in Pretoria, Masemola said this interference blocked proper oversight and slowed investigations into political killings and criminal cartels. He added Mchunu backed Sibiya’s efforts to centralise investigations, including those of the political killings task team, which risked obstructing ongoing investigations:
# The Gauteng Traffic Police has urged the public to prioritise safety on the roads this Heritage Day. Spokesperson Sello Maremane says with increased traffic expected, motorists are advised to obey speed limits, avoid alcohol, and ensure vehicles are roadworthy. Law enforcement agencies will maintain a strong presence to enforce compliance. He also called on citizens to respect heritage sites and protect vulnerable groups during the celebrations:
# Flights have been cancelled, schools and businesses have closed, and thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes as one of the strongest typhoons of recent years approaches southern China and Hong Kong. Super Typhoon Ragasa, with winds near its centre of around 220 kilometres per hour, is travelling across the South China Sea towards the Guangdong province. Ragasa is expected to make landfall on Wednesday. Water levels in coastal areas could see rises of up to two metres. Ragasa has already caused major evacuations when it swept over Taiwan and the Philippines.
# The South African under-20 football team are arriving in Chile today for the U-20 World Cup. Coach Raymond Mdaka praised his versatile 21-man squad as they face France, the US, and New Caledonia in the group stage. Crowned the 2025 COSAFA U20 winners and lifting the CAF U20 Men’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy, the couch says is all system go for the first match against France on Monday:
# And finally, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company is inviting South Africans to celebrate Heritage Day with flavour and fun at the Heritage Braai Day, from 11am to 5pm today. Due to adverse weather, the cable car is closed, but festivities continue at the Lower Station with food, prizes, and entertainment. Executive Director Selma Hercules says Heritage Day is about unity and togetherness, promising visitors local flavour, spot prizes, and a complimentary boerewors roll.
