# National police commissioner Fannie Masemola says Police minister Senzo Mchunu told him that president Cyril Ramaphosa approved the disbanding of the political killings task team. Masemola told the Madlanga commission in Pretoria that this claim caught him by surprise. He added that Mchunu became very angry when the unit continued working, calling the minister’s behaviour concerning:
# The High Court in Pretoria granted the National Prosecuting Authoritiy a forfeiture order of 4.4-million-rand held in 24 bank accounts of unsuspecting individuals in two banking institutions. The NPA’s spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana says a group of Chinese nationals paid unsuspecting individuals 200-rand to provide them with their details including their photos. She says those details were used to open different bank accounts which were used to conduct complex networks of fraudulent multiplication investment schemes:
# The South African Police Service is warning the public about a phishing scam misusing its name and logo. Spokesperson Amanda van Wyk says fraudsters send fake letters, WhatsApp messages, and intimidating calls, sometimes claiming non-existent cases or police stations, to extract money or personal information. Van Wyk reminds citizens that the police will never demand payment or communicate via WhatsApp or video calls. She urges the public not to share personal details or respond to suspicious messages:
# Rugby: Jan Serfontein’s return to Loftus Versfeld and his own assessment of his new Bulls team reveals a lot about where the Pretoria outfit’s focus has been in the build-up to the United Rugby Championship. He says they have two or three players in every position who on any weekend could pull on the jersey and do the job. Squad depth has long been the buzzword for modern rugby teams as they seek to juggle the challenge of the United Rugby Championship, the Champions Cup and the Challenge Cup.
# Financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-31-cents and the euro at 20-rand-41-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-37-cents and Bitcoin trades at 112-thousand-954-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-784-dollars-85-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-52-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Television network ABC has announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live will return tonight. Last week, the late-night show was taken off the air for an indefinite period of time, following comments host Jimmy Kimmel made relating to the death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. In his monologue last Monday, Kimmel said that the MAGA gang was trying to score political points off Kirk’s murder. He also mocked US president Donald Trump’s reaction to the shooting. Sinclair, one of America’s biggest owners of local TV stations, says it won’t air the programme.
