In women’s Rugby news, New Zealand’s Jorja Miller, England’s Megan Jones and Sophie de Goede of Canada have been nominated for the Women’s Player of the Year. They have been recognised for their world-class performances throughout the season. Meanwhile, Miller, Fiji’s Josifini Neihamu and New Zealand’s Braxton Sorensen-McGee have been nominated for 15’s Breakthrough Player of the Year. Winners, including Coach of the Year, Referee, and Try of the Year, will be announced during the trophy presentation ceremony at the Women’s Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Sharks get their United Rugby Championship campaign underway with an away match against the Glasgow Warriors on Friday evening. Head coach John Plumtree has selected a 29-man squad to travel to Europe for the three-match tour that also includes matches against the Dragons and Leinster. With numerous Springboks unavailable, alongside a lengthy injury list, the squad includes experienced campaigners like Lukhanyo Am, Edwill van der Merwe, Jaden Hendrikse, Marvin Orie and captain Vincent Tshituka.
# Golf: Captain Luke Donald says he’s proud of his European team after they rejected the chance to be paid for playing in the Ryder Cup. The PGA of America announced last year that Team USA would get paid for participating in the competition, breaking away from tradition. The Ryder Cup gets underway at Bethpage in New York on Friday. # And, Soccer: Paris St-Germain and France forward, Ousmane Dembélé, won his first Ballon d’Or. The 28-year-old scored 35 goals for PSG last season, as the team won the Champions League, the league title, and the French Cup. PSG manager Luis Enrique was named coach of the year. Barcelona and Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati became the first woman to win the Ballon d’Or for three consecutive years. England coach Sarina Wiegman was named the best women’s coach. Arsenal and PSG won the awards for women’s and men’s club of the year.
