# National police commissioner Fannie Masemola says the political killings task team revived dead cases and achieved significant breakthroughs in investigations. Appearing before the Madlanga commission of inquiry in Pretoria, Masemola revealed that as of February this year, the team had investigated 612 dockets, with 297 cases finalised, 125 still under investigation, ten pending National Prosecuting Authority decisions, and 117 withdrawn. He highlighted successes in investigations at Fort Hare University in the Eastern Cape:
Meanwhile, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department has confirmed that K9 Unit officer Johannes Makgatle is under internal investigation after allegations surfaced at the commission. KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi testified last week that Makgatle misused police systems and renewed licenses for murder-accused Katiso “KT” Molefe in exchange for rewards. JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the Internal Affairs Unit is investigating, vowing disciplinary action if misconduct is proven.
# A new study warns that African cities are not doing enough to adapt to climate change, with Durban and Harare highlighted as key lessons. Rising temperatures, declining rainfall, prolonged droughts, and severe flooding threaten vulnerable communities. Researchers caution that small fixes like drainage upgrades fail to address deep inequalities. Experts call for transformative adaptation through inclusive reforms, tackling root causes of vulnerability, scaling sustainable, and community-driven climate solutions to protect Africa’s urban populations.
# An Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon has killed five people including three children. According to the country’s health ministry four of those killed, including the children and their father, held US citizenship. Two others were wounded, including the children’s mother. The Israeli military in a statement said it was targeting a Hezbollah terrorist who “operated from within a civilian population”. It acknowledged “several uninvolved civilians” were killed and said the incident was being reviewed. It added the military will continue to act to remove any threat posed to the state of Israel.
# Rugby: Returning Australia prop Allan Alaalatoa says that his team saw Eden Park as just another rugby field as they aim to end New Zealand’s 31-year unbeaten streak at the Auckland venue. The All Blacks have not lost at Eden Park since 1994, but face a challenge to that record against Rugby Championship leaders Australia on Saturday. New Zealand suffered a record 43-10 defeat to South Africa in their last match in Wellington. Alaalatoa says they are focused on themselves:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-29-cents and the euro at 20-rand-38-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-36-cents and Bitcoin trades at 112-thousand-969-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-723-dollars-97-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-51-cents a barrel.
