# National police commissioner Fannie Masemola says some councillors staged false shootings to secure personal protection. Masemola told the Madlanga commission in Pretoria that the political killings task team was formed in 2019 and led at a provincial level to address political killings in KwaZulu-Natal, later extending operations to the Eastern Cape. He added the team was made permanent due to prolonged court delays linked to their investigations:
# Police have seized an illegal arms cache, including six AK-47 rifles, eight nine-millimetre-pistols, and ammunition, at a Bellville flat in Cape Town. It is reported that the arms cache were transported from KwaZulu-Natal. The eight arrested suspects were unable to provide valid firearm licenses. They face charges of illegal possession and are due to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court. The seizure forms part of ongoing Western Cape police operations targeting illegal firearms and gang-related violence.
# The DA in Gauteng says premier Panyaza Lesufi’s government is failing residents as the Department of Roads and Logistics faces 988 lawsuits, costing nearly 199-million-rand in legal fees and settlements over the past five years. DA spokesperson Evert du Plessis says potholes, sinkholes, and faulty traffic lights endanger lives and damage vehicles. He demands transparency on the province’s Litigation Reduction Plan and stricter road maintenance:
# North Korean leader Kim Jong Un says he has “fond memories” of US President Donald Trump and is open to future talks with the United States, if he can keep his nuclear arsenal. Kim met Trump three times for high-profile summits during Trump’s first term, before talks collapsed in Hanoi in 2019 over what concessions Pyongyang was prepared to make on its atomic weapons. The US demand that Kim give up his banned weapons has long been a sticking point between the two countries.
# Rugby: SA Rugby president Mark Alexander has paid tribute to Nolusindiso Booi following her retirement after a stellar 15-year career. Booi leaves the game as South Africa’s most capped Springbok Women’s player with 55 Tests and the most capped captain with 26. Her achievements include four Rugby World Cups and multiple Rugby Africa Women’s Cup titles. Booi expressed gratitude to SA Rugby for their support and trust in her leadership:
