# National police commissioner Fannie Masemola says the Madlanga commission offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the challenges facing the South African Police Service and to chart a path for meaningful reform. The hearings resumed in Pretoria, with Masemola testifying after KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Masemola said accountability, transparency, and addressing police shortcomings are key to restoring public trust and preventing a repeat of events that led to the inquiry:
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says South Africa has been consistent in its calls for United Nations Security Council reform and for it to better reflect global realities. The president is attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week. In his weekly newsletter, Ramaphosa says the current composition of the council and its decisions undermine the spirit of global cooperation. He says efforts at reform, including proposals to expand the permanent membership of the council, have stalled and must be reinvigorated.
# The DA has written to the Commissioner of the Public Service Commission, professor Somadoda Fikeni, calling for Higher Education and Training minister Buti Manamela’s appointment of three new Sector Education and Training Authority administrators be overturned. The appointment of Oupa Nkoane as Construction Seta administrator, Lehlogonolo Masoga as Services Seta administrator and Zukile Mvalo as Local Government Seta administrator have been criticised. The DA’s Karabo Khakhau says the three are unfit to be Seta administrators:
# France and Saudi Arabia will convene dozens of world leaders today to rally support for a two-state solution, with several of them expected to formally recognise a Palestinian state. Israel and the United States will boycott the summit. The US administration has warned of possible consequences for those who take measures against Israel, including against France, whose president, Emmanuel Macron, is hosting the New York summit. The summit, ahead of this week’s UN General Assembly, follows Israel’s launch of a long-threatened ground assault on Gaza.
# Cricket: Quinton de Kock has been added to the Proteas’ T20 and ODI squads to play against Pakistan and Namibia in October and November. The 32-year-old wicketkeeper, who retired from ODIs after the 2023 World Cup, has reversed his decision, citing his desire to represent the Proteas across both white-ball formats. David Miller will captain the T20I squad, while Matthew Breetzke will lead the ODI side. Donovan Ferreira will take charge in the T20I against Namibia on 11 October in Windhoek.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-28-cents and the euro at 20-rand-34-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-33-cents and Bitcoin trades at 112-thousand-354-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-721-dollars-82-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-5-cents a barrel.
