# KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says controversial businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala, currently detained while facing an attempted murder charge, has enjoyed undue privileges from law enforcement. He told the Madlanga commission in Pretoria that Matlala’s private vehicles were fraudulently registered as municipal cars and fitted with blue lights, allegedly by a senior Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department official. Mkhwanazi confirmed that a cell phone was also recovered from Matlala’s prison cell:
Mkhwanazi also said it’s vital to preserve cooperation between the police, the National Prosecuting Authority, the courts, and Correctional Services. He warned that outside interference or internal forces trying to disrupt the justice system, could undermine efforts to administer justice effectively to communities. Mkhwanazi added that the political killings task team plays a crucial role in fighting criminal syndicates:
# The Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee has voted to keep interest rates unchanged, holding the repo rate at seven-percent and the prime lending rate at 10.5-percent. Governor Lesetja Kganyago says the decision, backed by four of six Monetary Policy Committee members, reflects expectations that inflation will rise in coming months, peaking near four-percent. He indicated that the bank expects inflation to average 3.4-percent this year and 3.6-percent next year:
