Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: The Proteas Women defeated Pakistan by eight wickets in the first one-day match in Lahore. Sidra Amin scored an unbeaten century as the hostesses posted 255 for four in their 50-overs. In reply, Marizanne Kapp and Tazmin Brits scored tons and an unbroken 216-run partnership, South Africa’s highest third-wicket partnership, to help the visitors successfully chase down the target with ten balls to spare. The second ODI takes place on Friday.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s exiled women’s players will tour India during the one-day World Cup, where they will play against domestic teams. Most of the cricketers fled to Australia when the Taliban regime returned in 2021 and banned women and girls from participating in sports, education and employment. The team will also be invited to watch some of the World Cup matches. Afghanistan’s women played in a historic exhibition match against a Cricket Without Borders-eleven in Melbourne in January.
# Rugby: French flanker Axelle Berthoumieu’s 12-match ban for biting Irish opponent Aiofe Wafer during Sunday’s Women’s World Cup quarterfinal has been reduced to nine matches. This follows her appeal on the length of her suspension. A disciplinary committee said Berthoumieu’s admission of guilt, clean disciplinary record, remorse, and public apology were sufficient mitigation to reduce the ban. France will also be without Manae Feleu for Saturday’s semifinal against England after her two-match ban for a dangerous tackle was upheld.
# Soccer: A 10-man Real Madrid got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start, beating Marseille 2-1. Kylian Mbappé converted two penalties while captain Dani Carvajal was sent off for headbutting Marseille goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli, as the 15-time champions came from behind to win. Juventus and Borussia Dortmund played to a 4-all draw, while Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard came off the bench to score as Arsenal beat Spanish side Athletic Club 2-0. Tottenham Hotspur defeated Villarreal 1-0, with Qarabag seeing off Benfica 3-2.
# And finally, tennis: World number one Carlos Alcaraz of Spain headlines Team Europe in the annual Laver Cup, taking place in San Francisco this weekend. The other team members are German Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune of Denmark, Casper Ruud of Sweden, Czech player Jakub Mensik and Italian Flavio Cobolli, with Frenchman Yannick Noah the new non-playing captain. Former world number one, American Andre Agassi, captains Team World, to be represented by Americans Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, Reilly Opelka, and Alex Michelsen, Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo, and Brazilian Joao Fonseca.
