# The Gauteng Traffic Police arrest 43 reckless drivers
# And rugby: The Springboks are taking revenge
# President Cyril Ramaphosa says the national executive pledged to work closely with the North West provincial government to ensure the resolution of challenges currently plaguing municipalities in the province. Ramaphosa concluded a meeting with the provincial executive council aimed at enhancing intergovernmental coordination and improving service delivery in line with the priorities of the 7th Administration. The President encouraged the province to exploit public-private sector partnerships in the furtherance of development in the province:
# The DA in the Western Cape says it has submitted a memorandum, signed by all its mayors in the province, to the acting minister of Police, Firoz Cachalia, and Justice minister Mmamoloko Kubayi. The party says this to expedite demand to empower capable municipalities to make their communities safer. The DA’s Tertuis Simmers says this week in particular, the DA has seen a spike in deadly crime, and sympathises deeply with the families and communities affected:
# Gauteng Traffic Police have arrested 43 motorists for reckless and negligent driving on provincial freeways between this week. Offenders, aged 21 to 44, were caught speeding between 148-and 188-kilometres per hour. In one incident a 37-year-old BMW driver was nabbed at 188-kilometres-per-hour on the N4. Police spokesperson Sello Maremane warned that lawlessness will not be tolerated as speeding remains a leading cause of road fatalities:
# Nepal’s former Supreme Court chief justice Sushila Karki has become the country’s interim prime minister after deadly anti-corruption protests ousted the government. The 73-year-old Karki was sworn in during a brief ceremony, becoming the first woman to lead the impoverished Himalayan nation after a deal was reached with the protest leaders. Karki is expected to appoint ministers to her cabinet within a few days. She is widely regarded as a person of clean image and is being supported by student leaders from the so-called “Gen Z” to lead the interim government.
# And sports news:
# Athletics: The silver medal winner in the 200-metres at the world championships in 2023, American Erriyon Knighton, received a four-year ban for doping. The 21-year-old was charged in May last year after an out-of-competition test revealed the presence of a prohibited anabolic steroid. The US Anti-doping Agency wanted to sanction him, but an arbitration tribunal found he bore no fault or negligence. World Athletics and the World Anti-doping Agency’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was now upheld.
# And rugby: A much-improved Springbok team is working hard to restore their reputation after last week’s dismal performance against their archenemies, the All Blacks. The All Blacks lead 10-7 at halftime in Wellington, with both sides scoring a try. Cheslin Kolbe had the South African supporters in the stadium on their feet when he intercepted and ran 75 metres for his first try. He scored another try within the first few minutes of the second half, to make the score 17-10 in favour of the Boks. Grant Williams scored a third try to put the Boks even further ahead at 24-10.
