Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start with cricket: South Africa and England’s T20 series moves to Old Trafford in Manchester today after the Proteas won Wednesday’s rain-affected first encounter in Cardiff, Wales. The match was first reduced to nine overs a side after a two-hour delay, and South Africa reached 97 for five in 7.5 overs when it started raining again. England then chased a revised Duckworth-Lewis-Stern target of 69 in five overs, and could only reach 54 for five. The final T20 will be played at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Sunday.
More cricket news is the upcoming Women’s World Cup will feature an all-female officiating panel for the first time, with 14 umpires and four match referees set to oversee the games. The group includes the trio of Claire Polosak, Jacqueline Williams and Sue Redfern, who will appear at their third World Cup. The chairperson of the International Cricket Council, Jay Shah, says this defining moment is about visibility, opportunity, and the creation of meaningful role models. The 13th edition of the tournament starts in India and Sri Lanka on the 30th.
# Rugby: The wider Stormers squad will start their pre-season camp with a friendly against the Sharks in George today. A 28-man Stormers side will take on the Durban outfit in the pre-season match, with kick-off at Outeniqua Park at 6pm. The extended squad will then spend most of the following week in the Southern Cape, before the focus shifts to their opening United Rugby Championship clash with defending champions, Leinster, in Cape Town on the 26th.
# Golf: Switzerland’s Ludvig Åberg and France’s Tom Vaillant both shot eight-under 64 to share a one-shot lead after a weather-affected opening round of the PGA Championship at Wentworth, England. South Africa’s Casey Jarvis is a stroke back in third on seven under. England’s Matt Fitzpatrick is among those two off the pace, with Norwegian Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry of Ireland, and England’s Justin Rose, all within three of the early lead. Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is five off the lead after an opening-round 69.
# And finally, athletics: Usain Bolt believes he could’ve run the 100-metres in 9.42-seconds in the super-spikes used these days. The Jamaican set the world record of 9.58-seconds at the 2009 world championships in Berlin, Germany, and also set the world record of 19.19-seconds in the 200-metre at the same meeting. Both records are still in place. Bolt agrees with the company that provided his running shoes, Puma, which predicted through research that he would’ve been able to set a new record in their new carbon-plated spikes.
