# The High Court dismisses Thabo Bester and Nandipha Magudumana’s application to halt a Netflix documentary

# The High Court in Pretoria has dismissed with costs the urgent application by convicted rapist and murderer Thabo Bester and his former girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana, to halt the airing of the Netflix documentary Beauty and the Bester. They argued the documentary contains defamatory information and infringes on their right to a fair trial. In her ruling, Judge Suet Potterill said the application is not urgent, and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty will in no way be impacted by the utterances in the documentary.
# Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis welcomes acting national Police minister Firoz Cachalia’s willingness to consider the extension of investigative powers to metro police and law enforcement. The metro has been fighting to assume a degree of control over the police directly, with enhanced abilities to shape policy and accountability. Hill-Lewis says with the call for the devolution of certain policing powers, the metro is seeking more powers for municipal police staff:
# The Solidarity Movement mourns the death of American activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who was shot on stage at the Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The movement extended its condolences to Kirk’s family, friends, and supporters worldwide, remembering him as a strong advocate for dialogue, cooperation, and political engagement. The movement’s Werner Human calls on all to respect differences and uphold political tolerance.
# Legendary former Springbok Jan “Boland” Coetzee has died at the age of 80. He also played for Western Province and Maties. Coetzee played six Tests for South Africa between 1974 and ’76, including in the 1976 home series against the All Blacks which the Boks won 3-1. He also represented Province between 1967 and ’79, and was a member of the University of Stellenbosch’s team for several years. Coetzee later became a renowned winemaker on his farm, Vriesenhof, in the Stellenbosch area.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-42-cents and the euro at 20-rand-42-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-57-cents and Bitcoin trades at 115-thousand-244-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-645-dollars-10-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-97-cents a barrel.
# And finally: South African band Mango Groove’s 40th anniversary concert, Memories and Moments, will take place at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Johannesburg on Sunday. This will be the band’s first major performance in the city in five years and follows on their sold-out 40th anniversary kick-off concert at Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town in January. Lead singer Claire Johnston says the audience can expect a nostalgic celebration of hits, stories, and visuals, wrapped in a giant Mango Groove-style party.
