# The DA says the Immigration Amendment Bill will close loopholes
# Donald Trump will award Charlie Kirk with the Presidential Medal of Freedom
# And cricket: The Proteas’ T20 battle against England moves to Old Trafford
# The DA has welcomed the passing of the Immigration Amendment Bill in the National Assembly, saying it strengthens enforcement while protecting rights. The bill sets out clear rules for detention, magistrate oversight, and child protection to ensure fairness and accountability. The DA’s Adrian Roos says for years, the country’s immigration system has operated with loopholes that left both citizens and vulnerable migrants at risk:
Meanwhile, the EFF says it supports the Bill, as there is a need to protect the rights of all people regardless of their immigration status. The Bill, which, amongst other things, will ensure that detained foreigners receive timely judicial review and legal protection, was passed in the National Assembly yesterday. The EFF’s Suzan Thembekwayo says the government has failed to secure borders, adequately fund the Border Management Authority, and protect undocumented migrants from exploitation by employers:
# The Department of Transport has confirmed that it will gazette laws for implementation today to regulate e-hailing services. The department’s spokesperson, Collen Msibi, says the National Land Transport Amendment Act introduces official e-hailing licences, vehicle branding, criminal checks, and mandatory panic buttons. Drivers must also hold professional driving permits. Violations could lead to fines of up to 100-thousand-rand or two years in prison. He says the fast-tracked laws aim to ease violent clashes between taxis and e-hailing operators.
# President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead an engagement between the national executive and the North West provincial executive today. It will be held under the theme, A Nation that Works for All. This forms part of a series of engagements between the president and provinces, aimed at enhancing intergovernmental coordination and improving service delivery. The Presidency says the meeting will discuss various approaches to service delivery issues, including interventions to improve service delivery at the local government level.
# US president Donald Trump has confirmed that right-wing activist Charlie Kirk will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honour awarded by the president. A supporter of Trump, Kirk, was shot dead while speaking at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. He was at the first stop of his America Comeback Tour, during which he was scheduled to travel to universities to engage with students. Trump says the ceremony honouring the slain conservative activist will be large:
# Cricket: South Africa and England’s T20 series moves to Old Trafford in Manchester today after the Proteas won Wednesday’s rain-affected first encounter in Cardiff, Wales. The match was first reduced to nine overs a side after a two-hour delay, and South Africa reached 97 for five in 7.5 overs when it started raining again. England then chased a revised Duckworth-Lewis-Stern target of 69 in five overs, and could only reach 54 for five. The final T20 will be played at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Sunday.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-35-cents and the euro at 20-rand-35-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-54-cents and Bitcoin trades at 115-thousand-827-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-642-dollars-36-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-84-cents a barrel.
