# Solidarity has launched a defamation case against the minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, after she accused the trade union of spreading misinformation. This is over farm murders and alleged white genocide in South Africa. In its founding affidavit filed in the High Court in Pretoria, Solidarity wants the court to declare that it has been unlawfully defamed by Ntshavheni. Solidarity’s Dirk Hermann says they can no longer allow senior figures in government to get away with defamation:
# Deputy president Paul Mashatile will open the 12th SA AIDS Conference at Emperors Palace in Gauteng today. This will be in his capacity as the chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council. The conference will be held under the theme, Unite for Change – Empower Communities and Redefine Priorities for HIV/AIDS. The Presidency says this pivotal event will bring together leaders, researchers, and academics from around the world to address the evolving landscape of combating HIV and its management.
# Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for suspects who shot and injured five crime prevention wardens in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, on Sunday. The wardens were reportedly exercising their authority when a group resisted, and a skirmish broke out. Police spokesperson, Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, says the team allegedly saw approximately 12 unknown people, and when they tried to stop and search them, the group started to run away while shooting at the wardens:
# Victorian Supreme Court has sentenced Australian woman Erin Patterson to three life sentences with a non-parole period of 33-years. In July, she was found guilty of murdering three people, including the parents, aunt and uncle of her estranged husband, Simon Patterson. This is after she fed them a beef wellington meal she had deliberately laced with death cap mushrooms in 2023. There was only one survivor of the deadly lunch. Justice Christopher Beale says Patterson’s offending falls into the worst category of murder and attempted murder.
# Tennis: Twenty-two-year-old Carlos Alcaraz defeated Jannik Sinner of Italy to win his second US Open title. The Spaniard delivered an all-round performance to down his great rival, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, and claim his sixth Grand Slam title. Alcaraz is the second youngest man to win six major men’s singles titles in the Open Era after Bjorn Borg. This was the pair’s 15th career meeting and third consecutive Grand Slam final. Alcaraz says his rivalry with Sinner is special:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-59-cents and the euro at 20-rand-60-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-75-cents and Bitcoin trades at 111-thousand-158-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-586-dollars-19-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-12-cents a barrel.
