# Acting minister of Police, professor Firoz Cachalia, says the loss of a police officer should be considered a crime against the state. Twenty-seven police officers lost their lives in the line of duty during the 2024/2025 financial year. He spoke at the annual South African Police Service Commemoration Day at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Sunday. Cachalia says the officers who die in the line of duty are a powerful reminder of courage, sacrifice, and service to the nation:
Meanwhile, the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union says it demands that the government must come up with urgent practical steps to reduce police killings and injuries, whether on or off duty. POPCRU’s spokesperson Richard Mamabolo says they are demanding a catalyst transformation of policing conditions in South Africa:
# Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development Lebogang Maile says eight departments in the province achieved clean audits in the 2024/2025 financial year. These include the Office of the Premier, Treasury, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Fourteen out of 19 provincial entities, among them the Gautrain, Gauteng Film Commission, and the Liquor Board, also received clean audit opinions. Maile says persistent failures in consequence management and compliance continue to undermine progress:
# Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, has condemned Russia’s air strike on a government building in Kyiv at the weekend. In its largest aerial assault of the war, Moscow deployed over 800 drones, striking the main government building for the first time. At least four people were killed in strikes across Ukraine, including a baby and a young woman. Zelensky says this attack, at a time when real diplomacy could have started a long time ago, is a deliberate crime and an attempt to prolong the war.

Emilie Boulard and Joanna Grisez were impressive for Les Bleues, scoring two tries each. Scrumhalf Nadine Roos scored the only try for the Springbok Women in the final play of the game. This result means France will face Ireland in the quarterfinals, while South Africa will face reigning champions New Zealand.
