# Deputy president Paul Mashatile says attacking a police officer is an attack on the State itself, and it will be met with the full might of the law. He addressed the annual South African Police Service Commemoration Day in Pretoria on Sunday. Twenty-seven police officers lost their lives in the line of duty during the 2024/2025 financial year. A total of 66 police officers were killed in just two years. Mashatile says the government is intensifying efforts to ensure the safety of officers:
# The ANC has welcomed the clarification by Trade, Industry and Competition minister Parks Tau, regarding the recently published Draft National Credit Regulations. Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu says the ANC noted with appreciation the minister’s assurance that the proposed regulations are not intended to prejudice students indebted to institutions of higher learning, but rather to strengthen access to finance for micro, small, and medium enterprises, township economies, women, and historically marginalised communities:
# The minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has condemned the assassination of Johannesburg insolvency attorney, Bouwer van Niekerk. Van Niekerk was shot and killed on Friday at his law firm’s offices in Avonwold. The ministry’s spokesperson, Terrence Manase, says the news of his killing came shortly after the department received word of the fatal shooting of a male accused outside the Athlone Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town on the same day:
# The DA in the Western Cape has welcomed the announcement by Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism MEC, Ivan Meyer, that the provincial government, Wesgro, and industry partners are taking active steps to support affected farmers and protect jobs. The DA’s Noko Masipa says this is in the face of the recently imposed 30-percent tariff on South African agricultural exports to the United States. He says thousands of livelihoods in the Western Cape depend on stable and expanding export markets:
# The Israeli military has destroyed another high-rise block in Gaza City, the second major one it has targeted in as many days. Defence Minister Israel Katz posted a video of the building collapsing on X, with the caption: “We’re continuing”. The Israel Defense Forces which has been expanding operations in Gaza, said the Sussi Tower was being used by Hamas – a claim denied by the militant group. In a social media post, an IDF spokesperson urged residents to “join the thousands of people who have already gone” to al-Mawasi – an area between Khan Younis and the coastline.
# Cricket: England thrashed South Africa by a record 342 runs in the third and final ODI in Southampton. Centuries from Jacob Bethell and Joe Root saw the hosts post 414 for five, England’s highest total in ODIs for three years. In reply, Jofra Archer ripped through the Proteas’ batting order, taking four wickets, as the visitors were bowled out for 72. South Africa won the series 2-1. The two nations will now face each other in a three-match T20 series starting on Wednesday in Cardiff.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-61-cents and the euro at 20-rand-61-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-74-cents and Bitcoin trades at 111-thousand-432-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-590-dollars-69-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 65-dollars-32-cents a barrel.
