# A man has been shot dead outside the Athlone Magistrate Court in Cape Town this morning, just before 10am. The victim was attacked as he was leaving the court. Police are on the scene as investigations begin. The motive remains unclear. The court has since been closed for the day. This follows last week’s shooting in Mitchells Plain, where two people were attacked, one fatally. The incidents highlight ongoing gang violence plaguing communities in Cape Town and across the Western Cape.
# Stellenbosch Municipality has suspended its human resources manager, Alexander Kannemeyer, following a viral video in which he suggested making life difficult for white employees until they resign. The decision comes after an urgent council meeting today, where the DA’s amended motion for a suspension pending an independent investigation was approved by 27 councillors. According to News24, a separate motion from the GOOD Party calling for his outright dismissal was rejected, with 35 councillors voting against it.
# Cabinet has welcomed new train operators on Transnet’s rail network to improve freight efficiency and support economic growth. The new operators will run 41 routes across six corridors, carrying coal, chrome, iron ore, manganese, containers, fuel, and sugar. Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni told the media the operators are expected to move an extra 20-million tonnes of freight each year from next year, helping the government reach its target of 250-million tonnes by 2029:
# Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth says social partners convened via the National Economic Development and Labour Council need to respond collaboratively to safeguard economic stability and shield workers and communities from being overlooked amid shocks. Meth addressed the opening of the NEDLAC Summit in Sandton, Johannesburg. The minister says solidarity is about workers uniting through collective bargaining and dispute resolution mechanisms:
# Motorsport: Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton says, despite his grid penalty, he is motivated for the Italian Grand Prix this weekend. This is his first race in Monza as a Ferrari driver. The Briton carries a five-place grid penalty from last weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix, after he was penalised for a yellow flag breach. Hamilton, who will start Ferrari’s home race no higher than sixth, says he will embrace the good energy from the passionate Scuderia fans:
