BULLETIN 3 September 1 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Saftu blames privatisation and corporate greed for ArcelorMittal’s collapse
# The FF Plus demands the suspension of a Stellenbosch Municipality official over a racist video
# And cricket: Australian captain Pat Cummins should be fit for the start of the Ashes Series
# Union federation Saftu says ArcelorMittal South Africa’s closure of long steel operations in Newcastle and Vereeniging, and the threatened future of Vanderbijlpark, is a national disaster. The federation blames decades of privatisation, corporate greed, and government failure for the collapse, warning thousands of jobs and entire communities are at risk. Saftu’s Asive Dyani calls for a parliamentary inquiry, worker-led nationalisation of ArcelorMittal, and urgent action to protect the steel industry and jobs:
Meanwhile, the Institute of Race Relations says the mounting job losses resulting from companies cutting back their operations or leaving the country entirely are concerning. ArcellorMittal SA’s shut down will be resulting in three-thousand-500 job losses. Ford Motor Company SA also plans to cut 474 jobs at its plants in Pretoria and Gqeberha. IRR’s Makone Maja says the massive constraints of doing business in South Africa must be thoroughly reviewed and addressed:
# The Freedom Front Plus is calling on the DA to take immediate action against Stellenbosch Municipality’s Human Resources manager, Alexander Kannemeyer. This follows a video circulating on social media in which Kannemeyer allegedly suggests making life difficult for white employees until they resign. The FF Plus’ Gert van Niekerk says Kannemeyer further asserted that the practice of appointing skilled and qualified individuals typically results in white candidates, particularly white men, being prioritised:
# Cricket: Australian captain Pat Cummins should be fit for the start of the Ashes Series against England despite a back issue. The injury means he will miss next month’s three T20s in New Zealand and a one-day and a T20 series against India at home. The first of the five Ashes Tests starts in Perth on the 21st of November. Cummins took 18 wickets in the previous series in England which ended in a draw, with Australia retaining the Ashes.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-63-cents and the euro at 20-rand-55-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-64-cents and Bitcoin trades at 111-thousand-166-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-359-dollars-67-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 68-dollars-67-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The Solidarity Movement has launched the digital cultural home, MyHartland, connecting Afrikaners worldwide with their language, heritage, and community. Inspired by successful diaspora projects abroad, the platform offers news, cultural content, children’s resources, and opportunities to support projects in South Africa. According to Solidarity’s Marisa Engelbrecht, MyHartland aims to preserve Afrikaner traditions for future generations while uniting Afrikaners globally through shared identity, active involvement, and cultural pride.
