Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with cricket: South Africa thumped England by seven wickets at Headingley in Leeds to take a 1-0 lead in their three-match one-day series. Keshav Maharaj took four wickets and Wiaan Mulder three, as the homeside was bowled out for just 131 within 25 overs. In reply, Aiden Markram scored 86 from just 55 balls and shared an opening stand of 121 with Ryan Rickelton, as the Proteas claimed victory with almost 29 overs to spare. The second ODI will be played at Lord’s tomorrow.
More cricket news: Australian captain Pat Cummins should be fit for the start of the Ashes Series against England despite a back issue. The injury means he will miss next month’s three T20s in New Zealand and a one-day and a T20 series against India at home. The first of the five Ashes Tests starts in Perth on the 21st of November. Cummins took 18 wickets in the previous series in England which ended in a draw, with Australia retaining the Ashes.
# Rugby: Springbok wing Cheslin Kolbe says past victories over the All Blacks will count for nothing when they meet in Auckland on Saturday. They will try to become the first Bok team since 1937 to win at Eden Park, while the hosts will defend their undefeated record at the field since 1994. South Africa won their past four encounters, but Kolbe says Saturday’s challenge will be on another level. He believes it will be crucial for the Boks to stay focused on their game-plan.
# Golf: South African sensation Aldrich Potgieter will return to Sun City for the Nedbank Golf Challenge from 4 to 7 December, a year after almost winning it on his debut. He’ll be joined by multiple DP World Tour champion Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Twenty-year-old Potgieter is the youngest South African winner in PGA Tour history following his maiden victory in the Rocket Classic in June, and is the highest ranked South African in the world rankings – just outside the top 50.
# And finally, tennis: Thirty-eight-year-old Novak Djokovic has set up a blockbuster US Open semifinal with Carlos Alcaraz. The Serb defeated American Taylor Fritz, in five sets, as he continues his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam singles title. Spaniard Alcaraz eased past Czech Jiri Lehecka, in three sets. In the women’s draw, defending champion Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus received a walkover into the semifinals, after her opponent, Czech Marketa Vondrousova, withdrew with a knee injury. Sabalenka will face American Jessica Pegula, a repeat of last year’s final.
