In this bulletin:
# Mandla Mandela leads South Africa’s delegation the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza
# AfriForum and Saai are to unveil an international strategy against the ‘Kill the Boer’ chant
# And athletics: Bayanda Walaza is included in South Africa’s team for the World Championships despite an injury concern
# Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mandla Mandela, is leading South Africa’s delegation in the Global Sumud Flotilla, the largest civilian maritime mission challenging Israel’s blockade of Gaza. The fleet, launched from Barcelona in Spain with 50 vessels from 44 nations, carries food, medical supplies, and baby formula. International figures like Swedish political activist Greta Thunberg and American actress Susan Sarandon have joined. Despite storm delays, the mission will regroup in Tunisia, underscoring solidarity with Palestine amid South Africa’s genocide case against Israel.
# AfriForum and the Southern Africa Agri Initiative will tomorrow announce their international strategy against the ‘Kill the Boer’ chant in Centurion. AfriForum’s Kallie Kriel and Ernst van Zyl, alongside Saai’s Theo de Jager, will release a charge sheet dubbed the ‘Malema Dossier’ against EFF leader Julius Malema. The dossier, compiled by AfriForum’s Research and Private Prosecution Unit, explores Magnitsky Act implications which targets individuals and entities involved in serious human rights abuses. The organisations say this forms their strategy against Malema’s alleged extremism and corruption.
# The DA says efforts that are being made by the Agriculture Department to combat the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak in the country are encouraging. KwaZulu-Natal remains the epicentre of the disease. There are currently 274 unresolved outbreaks in five provinces, of which 180 are in KZN. The DA’s Willie Aucamp says the establishment of an industry–government task team on animal disease prevention, management, and control is welcomed:
# The Zion Christian Church says its new year consecration conference will take place from tomorrow to next Wednesday at Moria City in Limpopo. This marks its first major gathering since the Covid-19 pandemic. Attendees are urged to observe traffic rules, ensure vehicles are roadworthy, and supervise children. The church’s spokesperson, Moatshe Ngoepe, says they will work closely with law enforcement to maintain order and ensure a safe, spiritually uplifting event for all participants:
# Athletics: Rising sprinting star Bayanda Walaza has been named in a 49-strong South African team for the World Athletics Championships that kicks off in Tokyo next Saturday. The 19-year-old pulled up in the 100-metre final of the Diamond League meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, last Thursday, in what appeared to be a thigh muscle injury. His inclusion in the squad, comprising 32 men and 17 women and 11 relay-only athletes, is apparently not a guarantee of fitness.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-71-cents and the euro at 20-rand-62-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-74-cents and Bitcoin trades at 110-thousand-440-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-481-dollars-31-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 69-dollars-24-cents a barrel.
