His teammate Lando Norris, who was on course to finish second, had to retire with eight laps remaining due to an oil leak. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished second with Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar in third for his maiden F1 podium. Piastri, who now leads the drivers’ championship by 34 points, says when fighting for a championship, qualifying becomes even more important:
# And finally, tennis: World number two Carlos Alcaraz is through to the quarterfinals of the US Open. The Spaniard defeated Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets. Thirty-eight-year-old Novak Djokovic of Serbia eased past German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff to become the oldest man in history to reach all four major singles quarterfinals in one season.
