Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# First up we have rugby: Argentinian loose forward Marcos Kremer describes the All Blacks as the sport’s equivalent of his country’s World Cup champion soccer team. The two countries play in the first round of the Rugby Championship in Cordoba this weekend, and will meet again in Buenos Aires a week later. Kremer expects a great match at home and believes it will go down to the final minutes. The All Blacks have lost three out of their last ten matches to the Pumas, including last year’s Rugby Championship clash in Wellington.
# Cricket: Australia’s batting duo of Matt Short and Mitch Owen, and all-rounder Lance Morris have been ruled out of the upcoming three-match one-day home series against South Africa. Short and Morris are injured, while Owen picked up delayed concussion symptoms after being struck on the helmet by a Kagiso Rabada delivery during the second T20 on Tuesday. The three have been replaced in the squad by Matthew Kuhnemann, Aaron Hardie, and all-rounder Cooper Connolly. The first ODI will be played in Cairns on Tuesday.
# Soccer: European champions Paris St-Germain rallied from two goals down before winning a penalty shootout against Tottenham Hotspur to clinch the UEFA Super Cup in Italy. Spurs were 2-0 up through goals from Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, but PSG pulled one back five-minutes from time through substitute Lee Kang-in. Another substitute, Gonçalo Ramos, scored a 94th-minute equaliser to force the penalty shootout. PSG won the shootout 4-3 to snatch their first European trophy of the season.
# Tennis: Defending champion Jannik Sinner of Italy is through to the Cincinnati Open quarterfinals after beating French qualifier Adrian Mannarino. World number two, Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, eased past Italian Luca Nardi, while French qualifier Terence Atmane stunned American Taylor Fritz. The women’s defending champion, Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, cruised into the quarterfinals with a straight sets victory over Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Poland’s Iga Swiatek also made the last eight with a victory over Romanian Sorana Cirstea.
# And finally, athletics: Pole vault world record holder Armand Duplantis is excited over the prospect of fulfilling an ambassadorial role for next year’s inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship. The Swedish-American athlete had just set his 13th world record in the item and also won two Olympic gold medals. He had been named Star Athlete for the championship.
