Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with rugby: A hugely experienced Springbok team will aim for their fifth successive victory over the Wallabies in Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. Head coach Rassie Erasmus included 18 World Cup winners in his squad, while only three players – Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Edwill van der Merwe and Asenathi Ntlabakanye – have five Test caps or less. Erasmus opted for a five-three split on the bench. He believes they will be able to play the type of rugby they want to play against the Australians.
Meanwhile, Springbok centre Jesse Kriel says they are expecting a tough clash on Saturday, despite the Wallabies coming off a tough series against the British and Irish Lions. Kriel will link up with André Esterhuizen in the midfield while Damian de Allende is still recovering from a niggle. Thirty-one-year-old Kriel is excited for Esterhuizen to show what he can do against the Wallabies:
# Cricket: The T20 series decider between South Africa and Australia will be played in Cairns on Saturday after Dewald Brevis almost single-handedly beat the hosts in Darwin yesterday. He contributed an undefeated quick-fire 125 off just 56 balls – the highest T20 score ever for a Protea batter – and the visitors posted a mammoth 218 for seven. Brevis then took two catches while Corbin Bosch and Kwena Maphaka both took three wickets, and the Aussies were bowled out for 165. Australia won the first match by 17 runs.
# Golf: The top two players in the world, American Scottie Scheffler and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy, have been paired together for the first two rounds of the BMW Championship, which tees off in Baltimore, Maryland, tomorrow. The championship is the PGA Tour’s second of three legs in the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Fresh from winning the St Jude Championship, Englishman Justin Rose will play with American JJ Spaun. American Xander Schauffele has been paired with compatriot Michael Kim, while Norwegian Viktor Hovland is with American Akshay Bhatia.
# And finally, tennis: Five-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz is through to the fourth round of the Cincinnati Open. The Spaniard cruised past Serbian Hamad Medjedovic to secure a tour-leading 50th victory of the season. Russia’s Andrey Rublev battled past Australian Alexei Popyrin in three sets. In the women’s draw, American Coco Gauff moved into the last 16 without striking a ball after her opponent, Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, withdrew citing an illness. Italian Jasmine Paolini and Czech Barbora Krejcikova are also through to the round of 16.
