# We tee off with golf: South Africa’s Dean Burmester won his second LIV Golf individual title after beating Spaniards Jon Rahm and Josele Ballester on the first play-off hole to claim victory in Chicago. Burmester lost a two-shot lead at the start with three straight bogeys, but rallied back for an even-par 71 to finish on nine-under 204. There was also a team playoff, with Burmester’s Stinger team beating Torque for the title. Burmester, who bagged the 71-million-rand first-place prize, says this victory is special:
Meanwhile, England’s Justin Rose has moved back into the top ten of the world rankings following his victory at the St Jude Championship in Tennessee. The 45-year-old defeated American JJ Spaun on the third play-off hole to claim his 12th PGA Tour title. With this victory, Rose has also secured his spot in another Ryder Cup competition. He is now ninth in the world rankings, with Spaun moving up to sixth. The Englishman says he played some unbelievable golf:
# Rugby: Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is confident his team has done their homework fo the Wallabies’ Rugby Championship tour of South Africa. This follows an intense two-week training and conditioning camp in Johannesburg. The Boks will face the Wallabies at Ellis Park this Saturday and a week later in Cape Town. Erasmus stresses the importance of their preparation to match the competitiveness of the Wallabies, the All Blacks and the Pumas, but is pleased with the work the players put in.
Meanwhile, the most-capped Springbok Women’s player, Nolusindiso Booi, will lead a strong 32-player squad to the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England. The team boasts a combined total of 689 caps. Nineteen of the players have previous World Cup experience, among them vice-captain Babalwa Latsha, who has captained the team in 14 Tests. South Africa will open their campaign against tournament debutants Brazil in Northampton on 24 August, before further pool D matches against Italy and France. The squad will assemble in Johannesburg tomorrow.
# And finally, cricket: Australia defeated South Africa by 17 runs in the first of three T20 Internationals in Darwin, extending their unbeaten streak in the format to nine matches. Tim David scored 83 and shared a seventh-wicket stand of 59 with Ben Dwarshuis, as the hosts posted 178. Nineteen-year-old Kwena Maphaka was impressive with the ball for the Proteas, taking four wickets. In reply, Ryan Rickelton’s 71 kept South Africa in the hunt till the last over, but the visitors eventually fell short. The second T20 is at the same venue tomorrow.
