BULLETIN 10 August 1 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA demands equal action on racial hate
# A former senior MK Party member joins Floyd Shivambu’s new movement
# And boxing: A second boxer from Tokyo dies from a brain injury
# The DA has restated its commitment to non-racialism, rejecting any race-based division. The party says all racial hate incidents must face equal consequences. This follows mounting calls for the removal of Sport, Arts and Culture minister Gayton McKenzie over racial slurs against black South Africans, and backlash over an incest claim on coloured race by the Open Chat Podcast. The DA warns against double standards, citing its expulsion of former DA Member of Parliament, Renaldo Gouws, for racist remarks.
# Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga has reaffirmed a vision where every woman and girl lives in freedom, dignity, and security. Speaking at this year’s women’s day celebrations at Nkowankowa Stadium in Limpopo, Chikunga praised the legacy of liberation activists who marched to the Union Buildings 69-years-ago. Despite progress, the minister acknowledged ongoing challenges like poverty, inequality, gender-based violence, and femicide affecting women across the country:
Meanwhile, the EFF leader Julius Malema has condemned the exploitation of women in the workplace, especially domestic workers. Speaking at an EFF Women’s Day Rally at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre in Secunda, Mpumalanga, yesterday, Malema emphasised protecting women across all sectors. He advocated for women’s ownership in agriculture and mining. He also urges men to stop violence against women, stressing respect, support, and economic empowerment as crucial for gender equality:
# Former MK Party deputy secretary-general Nombuso Mkhize has joined Floyd Shivambu’s Mayibuye Consultation Process, becoming its head of Presidency. Her defection follows Shivambu’s earlier demotion and marks another high-profile exit from the MK Party. Mkhize, a former correctional officer linked to Jacob Zuma, was previously appointed to MK leadership despite limited political experience. Mayibuye’s spokesperson, Sydney Baloyi, says her early involvement highlights the initiative’s importance as consultations continue.
# South Africa will host the African Union-AIP Water Investment Summit next week in Cape Town. The summit aims to close Africa’s 531-billion-rand annual water investment gap. Heads of State, investors, and global partners will mobilise capital for climate-resilient infrastructure. Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, says key outcomes include a declaration on water investments, multi-billion-dollar pledges, and recognition of changemakers driving water sector transformation:
# Boxing: A second Japanese boxer has died from brain injuries suffered at an event in Tokyo. Twenty-eight-year-old Hiromasa Urakawa died yesterday after he was beaten via knockout in the eighth round of his fight with Yoji Saito on 2 August. It follows the death of Shigetoshi Kotari on Friday from injuries sustained during a separate bout at Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall. Both boxers underwent surgery for subdural haematoma – a condition where blood collects between the skull and the brain. The Japan Boxing Commission announced all local and regional title bouts will now be 10 rounds instead of 12.
