# And Women’s Day: The DA’s demands stronger police response to gender based violence
# The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union in Gauteng has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of two SAPS detectives that happened yesterday in Roodepoort. The officers were ambushed while transporting a prisoner from the local magistrates’ court, who later fled in a police vehicle. Detective Warrant Officer Sintwa and Sergeant Masenya tragically lost their lives. POPCRU spokesperson Richard Mamabolo calls for urgent safety reforms and demands justice for the slain officers:
# ActionSA says it will reconsider its participation in the National Dialogue on 15 August, citing growing public discontent and concerns from respected foundations over government control and rushed proceedings. The party warns that the dialogue risks becoming a window-dressing exercise that fails to deliver meaningful reform. ActionSA stresses the initiative stems from all Government of National Unity partners, not just the ANC, and urges a reassessment to ensure the process leads to real change, not just cosmetic engagement.
# DA Gauteng supporters is marching to the Germiston Central Police Station in Gauteng today, demanding more South African Police Service resources to combat gender-based violence and femicide. Led by DA Gauteng Police spokesperson, Lisa Schickerling, alongside DA MP Michéle Clarke and the DA’s deputy chief whip, Michael Waters, the march calls for the establishment of GBV desks at every station with trained officers to ensure sensitive, professional support for abuse victims.
# The family of the late former Zambian president Edgar Lungu has filed for leave to appeal a Pretoria High Court ruling ordering his remains to be repatriated to Lusaka for burial. Judge President Aubrey Ledwaba delivered the order yesterday, siding with the Zambian government’s claim of a prior agreement for a state funeral. The family disputes this, saying the court overlooked key events. If granted, the appeal will be heard in the Supreme Court of Appeal. Lungu died in Johannesburg two months ago.
# The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements has raised concern over a viral video accusing officials of selling RDP houses. Spokesperson Tahir Sema stressed that housing allocations follow strict procedures via the National Housing Needs Register. Sema warns that filming staff without consent violates privacy laws. He urges the public to report fraud, emphasising that no government-subsidised houses may be sold or fast-tracked for payment:
# And golf: South Africa’s Michael Hollick is leading the Sunshine Tour FNB Eswatini Challenge after completing a superb second-round 64 yesterday, bringing his total to 12 under par heading into the final day. Hollick’s compatriot Pieter Moolman and Allen John from Germany are tied for second place at 11 under par. Another South African, Jake Redman, is in third place with a round of 63 to bring his total score to 10 under par – just two shots behind Hollick.
