# The Western Cape Mobility Department hosted an event to honour the incredible women who are the backbone of the freight industry. This is part of the Freight Focus Month campaign, celebrating both female freight truck drivers and the wives and partners of drivers who make the industry a success. Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku says freight is one of the most essential components of the provincial and national economies, yet those who drive this sector are often underappreciated:
# Rhodes University says Journalism and Media Studies student, Asenathi Ngqobe’s story is a testament to the idea that with passion and purpose, a person can build a successful brand and become a catalyst for change. She funded her flourishing livestock farm using the profits she earned from her popular Makhanda-based braiding salon, Braids by SESE. At the Kwa Leah Country Estate, she manages half the land. Ngqobe says being a boss is not about how much money a person makes, but about making a social impact and changing people’s lives.
# Award-winning poet and renowned author, professor Kobus Moolman, says his love and appreciation of the written word started as a teenager at high school. The 61-year-old, who has been teaching at the University of the Western Cape since 2016, is set to deliver his inaugural lecture this evening. His lecture will delve into the way he has taught the writing of poetry. Moolman says writing poetry is not simply about digging deep in the hopes that it will come out:
# The University of Pretoria says Hatfield Campus’ lily pond, which was built in 1960, has since been a place of tranquillity and a source of inspiration for budding painters and sketch artists. The pond was inspired by French impressionist Claude Monet’s famous series of lily pond paintings featuring a Japanese bridge and a variety of hybrid lilies. The pond currently holds an estimated 13 varieties of species of water lilies. The university says the pond underwent a major renovation in 2011 and continues to serve as a living museum.
# And finally: Lady Gaga leads the list of nominees for the MTV Video Music Awards with 12 nods, including Artist of the Year and Best Album. Other top nominees include Bruno Mars with eleven, Kendrick Lamar with ten, and ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter with eight each. Alex Warren, Ella Langley, and Gigi Perez are some of the nominees for Best New Artist. Two new categories have been added this year: Best Country and Best Pop Artist. The award show will be held at New York’s UBS Arena on September eighth.
