BULLETIN 1 August 1:30 pm
Good afternoon, here is your Eco Minute:
# The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse says a ruling by the High Court in Pretoria to overturn Turkish company Karpowership’s generation licences means the controversial energy deals are now officially dead and will not affect electricity prices. The licences, issued by energy regulator Nersa, were part of a planned 20-year agreement worth 200-billion-rand. OUTA’s Stefanie Fick says this legal victory protects the public from being locked into a costly and flawed deal:
# The University of the Witwatersrand says the Rhisotope Project has officially reached operational status, where rhinos will effectively be protected through nuclear technology. The project aims to disrupt the illegal rhino horn trade by embedding low-level radioactive isotopes into the horn. CEO Jessica Babich says these radio-isotopes can be detected by radiation detection equipment at countries’ borders around the world, allowing for the effective interception of trafficked horns:
# And finally: SANParks is joining the world in celebrating Marine Protected Areas Day today, under the theme, Ocean Protection Needs Human Connection. This day recognises the critical role marine protected areas play in conserving marine biodiversity, protecting fisheries, mitigating climate change, and supporting coastal communities. South Africa’s oldest marine protected area is Tsitsikamma , located within the Garden Route National Park. SANParks says they are committed to strengthening ecological integrity while promoting social equity.
