# The eThekwini Municipality has established the country’s first World Trade Centre at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre, making Durban the first South African city to join the prestigious World Trade Centre Association. Durban now joins a global network of over 300 WTCs in nearly 100 countries, including cities such as New York, Tokyo, Amsterdam, and Nairobi. eThekwini’s Thembo Ntuli says the license gives Durban access to an international ecosystem of over one-million affiliated companies:
# University of Witwatersrand and Johns Hopkins University professor of Philosophy, Lucy Allais, has made history. She is the first female South African philosopher elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Current members of the academy represent innovative thinkers in every field and profession, including more than 250 Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners. Allais joins 16 other South African members of the academy. She says she is humbled by the recognition, adding that she is committed to developing a generation of thinkers.
# The North-West University has been nominated as one of the top three universities in South Africa in the Best Career Service category at the South African Graduate Employers Association Awards. The awards celebrate excellence and innovation in the graduate employment and development space. The Best Career Service category is determined through employer and graduate feedback, and recognises institutions that provide outstanding support in preparing students for the workforce. The university says this nomination is a reflection of its heart for its students.
# Global technology giant, Huawei (Whaa-wei), has awarded bursaries worth two-million-rand to high-achieving ICT students at the Tshwane University of Technology. This is part of a collaboration between the university and the company, which aims to support top-performing students and advance TUT’s presence in the digital space. Through the TUT-Huawei ICT Academy, more than one-thousand students have already received training and certification in emerging technologies such as cybersecurity and 5G.
# And finally: SANParks will mark World Ranger Day tomorrow at Table Mountain National Park in Cape Town. The day is an occasion to commemorate and honour rangers who have been killed or injured in the line of duty and celebrate their dedication in the conservation and protection of the country’s natural and cultural heritage. Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Dion George, will be part of the event.
