# Acting deputy chief justice, Mbuyiseli Madlanga, will outline details of the commission of inquiry into KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s claims of political interference in crime fighting this afternoon. Madlanga was appointed by president Cyril Ramaphosa to chair the probe into alleged criminal syndicate infiltration in law enforcement. Police minister Senzo Mchunu and deputy police commissioner for crime detection, Shadrack Sibiya, are on special leave. Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court will hold a special sitting for Madlanga on Thursday to celebrate him before he officially retires.
# The Public Servants Association encourages all taxpayers to adhere to tax regulations and file tax returns diligently throughout the 2025 filing season. Provisional taxpayers have until January 19 next year to submit their returns. PSA spokesperson Reuben Maleka also encourages the public to be aware of cybercrime. Cybercriminals are sending fake emails, SMS’s and WhatsApp messages claiming to be from the Revenue Service. Maleka warns these frauds can lead to identity theft, unauthorized access to bank accounts, and financial fraud.
# Former Mozambican president, Joaquim Chissano, says Africa’s liberation movements have drifted from their core mission to serve the people. Speaking at the ANC Liberation Movements Summit in Johannesburg, Chissano reflected on past mistakes, including weakened democratic institutions, growing detachment from citizens, and the silencing of dissent. He calls for renewed commitment to youth, women, and inclusive governance, urging leaders to honour the legacy of Africa’s liberation heroes:
# Tennis: Australian Alex de Minaur has credited his mentality and mindset for his recent success. The 26-year-old saved three championship points on his way to a three-sets victory over Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win the Washington Open and claim his tenth tour-level title. With this, De Minaur has risen to number eight in the world rankings. In the women’s draw, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez defeated Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets to claim the biggest title of her career.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-84-cents and the euro at 20-rand-85-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-96-cents and Bitcoin trades at 118-thousand-935-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-339-dollars-20-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 68-dollars-18-cents a barrel.
# And finally: The 12th South African International Ballet Competition, supported by the National Lotteries Commission, gets underway at the Artscape Theatre in Cape Town this week. The competition has three age groups: 9 to 12, 13 to 16, and 17 to 22, in both classical ballet and contemporary categories. This year’s jury members are from South Africa, China, Canada, South Korea, Switzerland, Belgium, and America.
