Good day, let’s look at the latest sports news and scores:
# We start off with news from the World University Games: Team South Africa secured 19 medals, including six gold, five silver, and eight bronze, at the event in Germany, finishing seventh overall on the medal table. The bulk of the team’s medals came from swimming and athletics. Nineteen-year-old speedster Bayanda Walaza ended with three medals, winning gold in the 100 and 200 metres and silver in the four-by-100 metres relay. Japan topped the medal table with 79, followed by China and the USA.
# Cycling: Reigning champion Tadej Pogačar won his fourth Tour de France title, cementing his status as the most dominant rider of his generation. The Slovenian was however denied a final stage victory by Belgian Wout van Aert on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark finished the race four minutes-24-seconds behind Pogačar, with German Florian Lipowitz third in the general classification standings. Pogačar says he knows he won’t be able to ride competitively forever:
# Cricket: The fourth Test between England and India in Manchester ended in a draw, with the hosts leading the five-match series 2-1. India, which began the final day trailing by 137 runs with eight wickets in hand, produced two match-saving partnerships. Captain Shubman Gill put on 188 with KL Rahul, and Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja put on an unbroken 203 for the fifth wicket. Gill says he is pleased with their batting effort:
# Motorsport: McLaren’s Oscar Piastri claimed victory in a wet-dry Belgian Grand Prix, his sixth win of the season. Heavy rain delayed the race start by 80 minutes, and then the first four laps took place behind the safety car. Once racing got underway on lap five, the Australian passed British teammate Lando Norris and controlled the race from there. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished third. Piastri, who has extended his championship lead over Norris to 16 points, says the race was lively:
# And finally, tennis: Australian Alex de Minaur has credited his mentality and mindset for his recent success. The 26-year-old saved three championship points on his way to victory over Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win the Washington Open and claim his tenth tour-level title. With this, De Minaur has risen to number eight in the world rankings. In the women’s draw, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez defeated Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets to claim the biggest title of her career.
