# President Cyril Ramaphosa says jobs in the auto manufacturing sector must be protected amid the looming US tariffs

# President Cyril Ramaphosa says protecting existing jobs in the auto manufacturing sector is paramount, particularly in light of the looming 30-percent US tariffs from Friday. In his weekly newsletter, the president says the introduction of stricter vehicle emissions regulations, as well as the new tariffs, are expected to have a significant impact on the sector. Ramaphosa says amid these challenges, the country’s auto industry is making the investments needed to build resilience, protect jobs and lead the way into a new era of green mobility.
# The Public Servants Association is calling on the new National Development Youth Agency board to immediately address alleged poor governance, nepotism and abuse of power, financial mismanagement, as well as ensuring consequence management. PSA’s spokesperson, Claude Naiker, says the board must also ensure that the agency develops programmes that are tangible to address the challenges faced by the youth:
# The Freedom Front Plus in Cape Town has accused the metro of gross negligence for dragging its feet in lodging a damages claim for the roof of the Cape Town Stadium. The party says the metro knew about the damage, which came to light during the installation of Cell C equipment, since 18 November 2015. The FF Plus’ Pieter Jansen van Vuuren says the metro only sent a damages claim to Cell C three years later:
# Cycling: Reigning champion Tadej Pogačar won his fourth Tour de France title, cementing his status as the most dominant rider of his generation. The Slovenian was however denied a final stage victory by Belgian Wout van Aert on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark finished the race four minutes-24-seconds behind Pogačar, with German Florian Lipowitz third in the general classification standings. Pogačar says he knows he won’t be able to ride competitively forever:
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-84-cents and the euro at 20-rand-85-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-94-cents and Bitcoin trades at 119-thousand-70-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-337-dollars-51-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 67-dollars-96-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Grammy-winning South African star, Tyla, is set to perform at the 2025 Global Citizen Festival on Central Park’s Great Lawn in New York in September. The festival will be headlined by The Weeknd and Shakira. Nigeria’s Ayra Starr and Mariah the Scientist are also featured on the lineup. This year’s edition will spotlight African voices not only on stage, but also at the heart of its advocacy campaigns, including a major drive to deliver energy access to one-million people across the continent.
