# Stellenbosch University’s professor of Education, Jonathan Jansen, is among 92 distinguished scholars who have been elected to the British Academy’s Fellowship. The scholars have been recognised for their outstanding contributions to the humanities and social sciences. This year, 58 new fellows have been elected from 25 universities across the United Kingdom, alongside 30 international fellows from universities in countries including South Africa, the US, Ireland, Australia, and France. Jansen says there is no greater honour for a scholar than to be elected to a prestigious fellowship.
# The University of Pretoria’s School of the Arts’ Drama Student Festival got underway at the Lier and Bok Theatres today. This five-day festival is a celebration of talent, fearless storytelling, and unforgettable performances, all brought to life by the next generation of theatre makers. The university says the performances promise to showcase the exceptional standard of the Drama school and the vast opportunities available to its graduates, as demonstrated by the various unique roles the students will undertake, from acting and directing to technical crew responsibilities.
# The University of Limpopo, through its School of Physical and Mineral Sciences, has donated smart TVs to three high schools as part of a broader effort to integrate technology into education. This is in partnership with the Astronomy2024 Legacy Project. The schools are St Bede’s High School, N’wanati High School, and Mafumani Secondary School. The university says the initiative aims to strengthen the teaching and learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in under-resourced and rural schools.
# Páros in the Greek islands was named as the best island in the world at the Travel and Leisure awards. The island rose to fame during the Cycladic civilisation for its Parian marble which was used in masterpieces like Venus de Milo and Nike of Samothrace. Travel and Leisure readers ranked Páros’s historic architecture, nightlife, and optimal windsurfing conditions the best in the world. Palawan in the Philippines came in second, with Bali in Indonesia third.
# And finally: The superhero reboot Superman has topped the North American box office in its second weekend. The movie stars David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth remained in second place, while Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer debuted at number three. Another newcomer, Paramount’s animated adventure Smurfs, opened in fourth place with Brad Pitt’s F1: The Movie, which is Apple’s highest-grossing movie to date, rounding out the top five.
