# The ANC secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, says the minister of Police Senzo Mchunu has not been found guilty or charged by any court of the law in the country. Mchunu was placed on leave of absence after explosive corruption allegations about criminal activities within the police by KwaZulu-Natal provincial police commissioner, Nhlahla Mkhwanazi. Mabulula says South Africans must allow the processes of the judicial commission of inquiry appointed by president Cyril Ramaphosa, to unfold:
# Eskom says between the first of April this year and 17 July, diesel consumption is 48.4-percent lower compared to the same period last year and remains within the budget allocated, helping maintain operational efficiency when needed. Eskom spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena says the power utility spent 5.8-billion-rand on fuel for its open-cycle gas turbine plants, generating 941.75-gigawatt-hour of electricity:
# The Tshwane Metro Police says it continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to enforcing the rule of law and protecting the lives of the residents. Recently, TMPD Public Transport and Task Team Units, conducted targeted road safety operations across Pretoria Central, Laudium and Akasia. Mayoral committee member for Community Safety, Hannes Coetzee says during these operations, a total of 68 minibus taxi were impounded for being unroadworthy; and operating without permits:
# Thirty people have been injured after a vehicle drove into a crowd queuing to get into a nightclub in Los Angeles. The nightclub was hosting a reggae/hip hop event at the time. The LA Fire Department said seven people were critically injured with six in a serious condition after the crash in East Hollywood. A line of mostly women waited to enter the Vermont Hollywood music venue when the car hit them. The police is investigating the crash as an intentional act because the intoxicated driver made a U-turn before ramming into the crowd.
# Rugby: The Junior Springboks broke a 13-year drought by powering to a 23-15 win over the Junior All Blacks in the final of the World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Rovigo in Italy, on Saturday night. The success was South Africa’s first since 2012, when a group with the likes of Handre Pollard, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Steven Kitshoff, won the Baby Boks their last title. The South Africans were leading 13-5 at halftime. Xola Nyali and Gilermo Mento scored a try each, with Vusi Moyo adding two conversions and three penalties to the final score.
# Golf: Scottie Scheffler closed in on a maiden British Open title on Saturday, after opening up a four-shot lead ahead of the final round at Royal Portrush. The world number one eased to a four-under par third round of 67 to reach 14-under for the tournament. Scheffler is targeting a fourth major title and the third leg of a possible career Grand Slam. He is now on the brink of becoming the first world number one to win the British Open since Tiger Woods clinched his third title in 2006.
