BULLETIN 5 July 1 pm
Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# Eskom says the power system is meeting the winter demand
# Over 800 households are affected by the flooding in Cape Town
# And finally: The chips are down at Wimbledon
# Eskom says the power system remains stable and continues to show resilience in meeting the winter demand. Spokesperson Daphne Mokwena says while occasional system constraints do arise, they are effectively managed, with sufficient emergency reserves available and strategically deployed during morning and evening peak periods. She says the power utility remains committed to strengthening grid reliability through the ongoing implementation of the generation recovery plan:
# The City of Cape Town says assessments are underway following last night’s heavy downpours that affected several areas, including Mfuleni, Gugulethu, and Khayelitsha. The city’s Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, says the Vygieskraal canal burst its banks, resulting in flooding on a number of roads in the Athlone and Belgravia area. She says a total of three-thousand-750 people were impacted:
# The Department of Social Development says it is moving to address serious concerns raised by the South African Human Rights Commission about unqualified staff at secure care centres. The department’s spokesperson, Bathembu Futshane, says the commission found gaps in the qualifications and skills of child and youth care workers and provinces have now agreed on clear next steps, including boosting training, auditing qualifications, and lobbying universities to expand child courses:
# And now for tennis news:
# Seven-time champion Novak Djokovic will later today take on compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round at Wimbledon. Since winning the US Open in 2023, the Serbian had to endure a string of narrow misses in his bid to claim a record 25th major. The former world number one has lost one Grand Slam final and three semifinals since then, but he says Centre Court at Wimbledon is where he feels most comfortable. Djokovic won all three of his previous meetings with Kecmanovic, including one at Wimbledon in 2022.
Meanwhile, five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek will be out for revenge when she faces Danielle Collins at Wimbledon later today. The number 8 seed suffered a shock third-round defeat to the American at the Italian Open earlier this year, where she was the defending champion. There is no love lost between Swiatek and Collins after the world number 54 blasted the Pole for her “fakeness” after retiring from their match at the Olympics last year. About today’s match, Swiatek said she will need to prepare tactically.
# And on a nostalgic note: Oasis have reunited on stage for the first time in almost 16 years, with brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher taking to the stage at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. The pair split in 2009, and for many years, a reunion seemed unlikely. When the reunion was announced last summer, it quickly became overshadowed by the controversy of dynamic pricing, causing prices to rocket. But fans agreed it was worth every pound they paid. This was Oasis sounding almost as good as ever. And in the end, it was all about the music.
Stay tuned for more news………….
