Good afternoon. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The Students Federation demands Parliament’s intervention over Nkabane’s inaction
# Australia cancels Kanye West’s visa over a Nazi song
# And soccer: Liverpool and the Premier League describe Diogo Jota as a champion following his death
# The South African Students Federation has demanded from Parliament’s Higher Education portfolio committee to take action over minister Nobuhle Nkabane’s silence on critical student issues. The federation’s president, Keamogetswe Masike, says repeated attempts to engage the minister have been ignored. Concerns include the National Student Financial Aid Scheme’s board appointments, expired South African Union of Students leadership, unjustified allowance deductions, and 145-million-rand lost in private accommodation payments. He warns of national student mobilisation unless urgent intervention and accountability follows.
# ActionSA is calling on government and the Ministry of Police to protect whistleblowers. The party says this follows the murder of the Head of Corporate and Forensic Audits in the City of Ekurhuleni, Mpho Mafole, in Kempton Park. ActionSA’s Michael Basch says the killing marks the second fatality and third violent attack on senior officials within the metro’s Finance Department since 2023:
# The DA in Mpumalanga says it supports the intervention strategies to fight against construction mafia in the province. The provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport announced that a national summit will be convened to abolish these criminal syndicates. The DA’s Teboho Sekaledi says the delayed construction projects has become a burden to taxpayers and probably used as cash cows for ANC comrades:
# Australian Home Affairs minister, Tony Burke confirmed that US artist Kanye West had his Australian visa cancelled after releasing a song that promotes Nazism. The rapper’s track “Heil Hitler,” which praises Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, was released across social media and music streaming platforms in May. The ban follows a series of antisemitic posts West made on X, including one where he says “I love Hitler.” Burke says although West’s earlier comments had not affected his visa status, officials reassessed the situation after the song’s release.
# Soccer: Liverpool and the Premier League have expressed shock and devastation at the death of Liverpool and Portuguese star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre. The brothers died in a car crash in Spain. Twenty-eight-year-old Diogo made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and helping them secure the 2024/25 Premier League title. He also lifted the Carabao Cup in 2022 and twice won the Nations League with Portugal. The league says the sport has lost a champion who will be deeply missed.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-51-cents and the euro at 20-rand-65-cents. One British pound costs 23-rand-92-cents and Bitcoin trades at 109-thousand-746-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-348-dollars-85-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 68-dollars-62-cents a barrel.
