# Former Transnet executives Brian Molefe and Siyabonga Gama have been arrested after they handed themselves over to the Hawks this morning over a multimillion-rand locomotive tender deal linked to state capture. They’re among five ex-managers charged for a 2015 payment to Trillian Asset Management. Also charged are Anoj Singh, Garry Pita, and Phetolo Ramosebudi. Molefe is now an MK Party member of Parliament. The group faces corruption charges. They are expected to appear in court later today.
# International Relations and Cooperation minister, Ronald Lamola, is leading a delegation to the fourth international conference on Financing for Development in Seville, Spain, today. The four-day summit aims to reform global financial systems, and implement Sustainable Development Goals. The minister says South Africa will also host a side event on debt sustainability for developing nations, aligning with its G20 goals of equality and financial justice:
# The South African Weather Service says the cold weather will continue in some parts of the country today. South Africa has experienced low temperatures, windy conditions, and wet weather since last week. Another cold front is expected to make landfall in the Western Cape on Wednesday. City of Cape Town Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell says they are still monitoring the situation:
# Canoeing: This year’s Berg River Marathon is shaping up to be one for the ages with two legends facing up against the new generation. Defending champion Tom Lovemore returns, with the canoe builder from Knysna remaining one of the favourites. Legends Hank McGregor and Robbie Herreveld, with a combined age of 100 and a total of 19 victories between them, look most likely to be the roadblock to Lovemore’s hopes of a repeat victory. The marathon starts in Paarl on Wednesday morning and ends in Velddrift on Saturday.
# The financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-77-cents and the euro at 20-rand-85-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-35-cents and Bitcoin trades at 107-thousand-628-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-286-dollars-20-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-78-cents a barrel.
# And finally: Beyoncé was forced to stop her show in Houston when the car she was sitting in started to tilt mid-air. The elaborate stage prop, a red Cadillac, is suspended on cables and carries the superstar high over her fans near the end of her show. However, during the weekend’s performance, the car started slowly tilting to one side, leaving the 43-year-old performer clinging to a flagpole for support. Beyoncé’s company, Parkwood Entertainment, said in a statement a technical mishap caused the car to tilt. She was quickly lowered, and the show continued without further incidents.
