In this bulletin:
# The head of Crime Intelligence and other arrested officers have not yet been suspended
# Floyd Shivambu announces the Mayibuye National Consultation Team
# And Donald Trump says he would consider attacking Iran again
# SAPS spokesperson Athlenda Mathe has confirmed that no suspensions have been effected for Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and six other senior SAPS officers arrested last week. They appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court yesterday on charges relating to unlawful senior appointments within the police force. Mathe says police commissioner Fannie Masemola is awaiting a full factual report from the Investigating Directorate before making a decision. She stressed that the Crime Intelligence Division remains functional, stating that Masemola will appoint a senior officer to investigate the matter internally:
# Former MK Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu has unveiled 65 members of the Mayibuye National Consultation Team, with 12 forming the executive. Shivambu, the national convenor, said key figures include former ANC, EFF and MK Party leaders, such as Nolubabalo Mcinga, Luther Libelo, Patrick Sindane, Gabisile Shongwe and Archbishop Stephen Zondo. Shivambu emphasised unity, humility, and the rejection of factionalism. He said that the team of heavyweights could contest the upcoming elections:
Meanwhile, Shivambu has issued a public apology to MK Party national spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela for drug allegations. This comes as the Johannesburg High Court summoned Shivambu after he failed to apologise within 48 hours for his statement made in a recent eNCA interview. Ndhlela’s lawyers labelled this as defamatory. Shivambu used the opportunity to denounce drug use in South Africa:
# The Eastern Cape MEC for Economic Development, Nonkqubela Pieters, is hosting the Provincial Underage Drinking Summit today at Abbotsford Christian Centre in East London. The summit aims to tackle the province’s rising underage drinking crisis, including the worrying trend of pen-down parties. The summit will unite stakeholders for strategic collaboration and empower communities to combat youth alcohol abuse through solution-driven dialogue.
# U.S. President Donald Trump sharply criticised Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. Speaking to the media yesterday, Trump also dropped plans to lift sanctions on Iran and said he would consider bombing Iran again if Tehran is enriching uranium to worrisome levels. Trump was responding to Khamanei’s first remarks after a 12-day conflict with Israel that ended when the United States launched bombing raids last weekend against Iranian nuclear sites. Khamanei said Iran “slapped America in the face” by launching an attack against a major U.S. base in Qatar following the U.S. bombing raids. He also said Iran would never surrender.
# Tennis: Lloyd Harris of South Africa will face Belgian Zizou Bergs in the first round of Wimbledon next week. Twenty-eight-year-old Harris was supposed to qualify for the grass-court Grand Slam tournament, but a series of late withdrawals saw him move straight to the main draw. A slew of injuries caused his world ranking to plummet from 31st in September 2021 to the current 314th. His best showing at Wimbledon was reaching the second round in 2021 and again last year. Twenty-six-year-old Bergs is 49th in the world.
