# The High Court in Pretoria upholds the suspension of the Road Accident Fund’s CEO
# The DA accuses Tshwane’s deputy mayor of owing 12.5-million-rand in unpaid rent
# And tennis: Line judges are ditched at Wimbledon after 148 years
# Road Accident Fund CEO Collins Letsoalo’s urgent court bid to overturn his suspension for insubordination has been dismissed with costs by the Hight Court in Pretoria. Judge Graham Moshoana ruled the RAF board’s decision was lawful and reasonable. Letsoalo was suspended for defying Parliament’s standing committee on Public Accounts. The court found no legal basis for his claims, rejected his alleged right to be reappointed, and criticised his failure to join Transport minister Barbara Creecy in the application.
# Basic Education minister Siviwe Gwarube has called on young people to lead Africa’s future by embracing values of solidarity, equality, and sustainability. Speaking at the Junior G20 summit in Benoni, Gauteng, Gwarube urged the youth to be active citizens and shape their communities through leadership from school level. She emphasised the importance of youth voices in global conversations and encouraged learners to take charge of building a safe, united world:
# Two learners from Lesedi Secondary School in Lethabong, east of Pretoria, will remain in custody after appearing in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court for the alleged murder of grade ten learner, Lethabo Mokonyane. National Prosecuting Authority regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says the grade ten and 12 learners are accused of stabbing Lethabo during a fight at school earlier this month:
# The DA in North West alleges that Tshwane deputy mayor and mayoral committee member for Finance, Eugene Modise, owes the North West Housing Corporation 12.5-million-rand in unpaid rent for the Morula Sun property. The property is said to be leased through his company, Mzanzi Resorts. The DA’s CJ Steyl says the lease began in 2019 at 150-thousand-rand per month and was extended to 2026 despite arrears. Steyl has called for investigations, accusing Modise of exploiting a failing ANC-linked provincial entity.
# Tennis: A new era will dawn on Wimbledon on Monday when the famous grass-court tournament will go without line judges for the first time in its history of 148 years. They are being replaced by the electronic line-calling system already used by two other Grand Slam tournaments, the US Open and the Australian Open. Tournament director Jamie Baker says they had to balance Wimbledon’s age-old traditions with innovation while still being careful to protect its heritage, such as the rule that players must wear predominantly white clothing.
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-83-cents and the euro at 20-rand-91-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-45-cents and Bitcoin trades at 106-thousand-588-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-367-dollars-22-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-98-cents a barrel.
