Good morning. I am……..
In this bulletin:
# The DA welcomes the arrest of the head of police crime intelligence
# Iran’s supreme leader says the US strikes did not disrupt their nuclear programme
# And Olympic Games: IOC members want to protect the female category in sport
# The DA has welcomed the arrest of Crime Intelligence boss, Dumisani Khumalo, in connection with alleged unlawful senior appointments. This follows the arrest of several other senior officers from the Crime Intelligence division earlier this month, including chief financial officer Philani Lushaba, in connection with an alleged cover-up of a burglary and the alleged unlawful purchase of two luxury properties. The DA’s, Dianne Kohler Barnard, says these arrests point to yet another serious breach of trust within a critical state institution:
Meanwhile, the GOOD Party has welcomed the arrest Khumalo, saying senior members of law enforcement must be held to the highest standards of integrity and accountability. GOOD’s secretary general, Brett Herron, says corruption and criminality cannot be allowed to fester within the ranks of those entrusted to uphold the law:
# Former National Union of Mineworkers deputy president Phillip Vilakazi has been elected as the union’s new president, unseating Dan Balepile by a difference of 80 votes at the 18th National Congress in Boksburg. Balepile was running for a second term. Olihile Kgwari is the new deputy president, Mpho Phakedi is the general secretary, and the treasurer general is Hellen Diatile. Vilakazi has promised reforms aimed at unifying the union, emphasising that leadership in NUM is about service and commitment, not popularity.
# Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, says America’s strikes did not accomplish anything significant to disrupt the country’s nuclear programme. President Donald Trump has claimed the strikes on three sites obliterated Iran’s nuclear capability; however, a leaked US intelligence report suggests that the damage may not be as severe. In his first public address since a ceasefire with Israel was agreed on Tuesday, Khamenei warned that Iran would respond to any further US attacks by targeting American military bases in the Middle East.
# Olympic Games: International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry says there is overwhelming support among members to protect the female category in sport. This follows the controversy around the Paris 2024 boxing tournament after two athletes, Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting, won gold medals. This is despite having been disqualified from the previous year’s World Championships for allegedly failing to meet gender eligibility criteria. Coventry says a working group will be established to come up with a new policy:
# And the financial indicators: The dollar trades at 17-rand-83-cents and the euro at 20-rand-87-cents. One British pound costs 24-rand-51-cents and Bitcoin trades at 107-thousand-356-dollars. Gold sells at three-thousand-299-dollars-60-cents a fine ounce and Brent crude oil is quoted at 66-dollars-91-cents a barrel.
