# The British prime minister says Iran should return to the negotiation table
# Eskom’s employees charge three-billion-rand for overtime
# And a cold front will hit two provinces this week
# We start with news from the Middle East: Britain’s prime minister has urged Iran to return to the negotiating table after the United States attacked its nuclear facilities. Keir Starmer said in a post on X that Iran’s nuclear programme is a “grave threat to international security”. He called on Iran to return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis. Iran’s foreign ministry earlier said the US had begun a “dangerous war against Iran” by striking its nuclear sites, an attack it said was a violation of international law.
# And back home: The Public Servants Association says gender-based violence remains one of the most pressing issues affecting communities across the country. The association’s spokesperson, Claude Naiker says too many lives have been lost, and too many families have suffered as a result of senseless acts of violence. He says the PSA is urging community members to remain vigilant, report abuse, and support survivors in their pursuit of justice:
# Electricity and Energy minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa responded to parliamentary questions from EFF MP Mandla Shikwambana, enquiring about overtime expenditure for Eskom employees. Its financial report reveals over 10-million-rand in board fees and three-billion-rand in overtime were paid out. Ramokgopa said the amounts paid included fees for both board meetings and subcommittee meetings. Energy expert Mohamed Madhi says there are a few factors relating to overtime:
# ActionSA says it is deeply disturbed by the recent targeted killings of two councillors in the City of Johannesburg. The party says this comes after the tragic murders of councillors Thulani Buthelezi and Zakes Mathe, both from the ANC. ActionSA’s Siyabonga Zwane says both murder incidents are believed to be politically motivated, linked to rivalries, control over public resources, and entanglement with criminal networks:
# Tennis: Russian Daniil Medvedev dispatched German home favourite Alexander Zverev in three sets to reach the finals of the ATP tournament in Halle. The world number 11 came through 7-6, 6-7, 6-4 in a battle lasting just under three hours. Later this afternoon, Medvedev will play in his first final on the tour since March 2024, against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. It was the 20th clash between the two players of the same generation, with the 29-year-old Medvedev now leading the 28-year-old Zverev 13-7.
# And finally: The South African Weather Service says cool and cold conditions will continue today but warned of an intense cold front that will hit the Western Cape and Northern Cape on Wednesday and Thursday. The public and small stock farmers are advised that very cold, wet, and windy conditions with heavy rainfall, strong interior winds and gale-force coastal winds, very rough to high seas, and light snowfall on the high ground can be expected.
