# Stats SA says debt-related civil cases continue to show a downward trend

# Statistics South Africa says over eight-thousand civil judgements for debt were recorded in April, with a total value of 221-million-rand. This marks a 19.5-percent decrease compared to the same time last year. The biggest decreases were in money lent, promissory notes, services, and other debts. Stats SA’s Onica Mushwana says the data shows a continued downward trend in civil debt cases, suggesting a slight easing of pressure on the courts and consumers:
# The Ministry of Electricity and Energy says the South African Renewable Energy Masterplan will drive industrialisation and skills development in the renewable energy sector. Launched during the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town last week, the plan aims to support local manufacturing, grow battery storage value chains, and promote inclusive participation in the energy transition. Deputy minister Samantha Graham-Maré says SAREM is expected to create 25-thousand jobs by 2030:
# The GOOD Party says it stands in solidarity with the residents of Cape Town who are facing threats of eviction from the Woodstock Hospital, Irene Grootboom House, and Helen Bowden Nurses Home in Sea Point. The party says these three occupied public buildings are now home to about two-thousand residents. GOOD’s Axolile Notywala says South Africa must meaningfully engage with poor people who have created homes for themselves, after having been failed for decades by all three levels of government:
# A 40-year-old Mozambican kidnapping kingpin was shot and killed during a shootout with police at a residential complex in Midrand, Johannesburg. Police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe says the police anti-kidnapping task team was tracing a kidnapped Pakistani businessman from Pretoria West. They proceeded to Fourways, and upon arrival, a shoot-out ensued. One suspect was killed and turned out to be Mauro Mucambe Junior, a wanted kingpin in Mozambique, where he was linked to several kidnappings:
# After a three-year run at the top of the annual list for the most liveable city in the world, the Austrian capital, Vienna, has been beaten out by “Wonderful, Wonderful Copenhagen”. Copenhagen triumphed with perfect scores for stability, education, and infrastructure, while Vienna tied for second place with the Swiss city of Zurich. Australia has three cities in the top ten: Melbourne in fourth place, Sydney at sixth, and Adelaide at ninth. Geneva in Switzerland was fifth, Osaka in Japan and Auckland in New Zealand shared the seventh spot, while Vancouver in Canada came in at tenth.
# And soccer: Mamelodi Sundowns aim to qualify for the last 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup with a win over Borussia Dortmund in Cincinnati, the United States, this evening. The Brazilians top Group F with three points after a 1-0 win over Ulsan, courtesy of striker Iqraam Rayners. Rayners says the team must stay composed and tactically disciplined. Dortmund are unbeaten in eight matches, while Sundowns boast just one loss in their last 27 matches. The two teams face each other for the first time. Kick-off is at 6 pm, South African time.
